It doesnt matter, in early stages, you dont go too much in dungeon. And i act 2 you can buy 2 bags, which gives you aditional weight (one for 100 lb and other 200 lb)
It sure sounds like a design choice. They would have been 1-2 lbs otherwise like normal. Probably there to keep people resting after every fight (or at least make it a hassle so they don't do it).
1) adds strategy of when and where to bring the food.. You don't need even a single ration if you arent going to go dungeon crawling..
2) early game you never need it..
3) after early game you're more than capable of holding 200lbs worth of rations, not that you need it...
4) again.. its for when you plan to go dungeon crawling...
5) use your brain its not that difficult.
Why do I need 120 pounds of "food" for 6 people for two nights? Their gear is only 8-9 pounds of the ration, right?... So why can't they reuse the same gear? It's like: "Oh my, I've slept on these sheets, and ate from these pots and pans, and now they are dirty... I simply must throw them away, and use new ones..."
WHY?!?
If I want to camp in a dungeon for four nights, I need 240 pounds of fracking food, seriously?!?!?!?!?!? How many freaking horses is Amari eating?!?
Before anyone says: "why would you need to spend four nights in a dungeon?!?" (seriously, I can just hear the trolls now)… the answer is that I don't "need" to... but that fact, doesn't change the fact that the "rations" are WAAAAAY too heavy. Six people in a dungeon for four nights should only take at MOST 68 to 70 pounds... not 240 pounds.
And what if we took that to a full week of camping?... 420 pounds? Did Amari start eating elephants? (<--- exaggerating to be funny)… but seriously... that should only be 80 pounds at MAX.
On Pathfinder RPG, a trail ration weigh for 1 lb for people per day, it's not 10 lbs. It's too heavy indeed. People who are wondering where I took this number, just check here, it's from the V1 rules : https://www.d20pfsrd.com/equipmenT/goods-and-services/hunting-camping-survival-gear/#table-food-drink
So using ration have two main use cases :
1) if you rest using your ration without hunting, then you resting time is quite faster (hunting takes often 6+ hours)
2) In dungeon, you cannot hunt, so you need ration to rest
In addition, if you fail your hunting check and do not get enough rations without having any on you, then you wont be fully rested
Best thing is to be proactive and place surplus rations into the stash asap. I would have preferred a different system, like a camping inventory screen/tab, purchasing different quality tents etc and having different kinds of rations. I guess the aim with supplies being so heavy is so that all the camping equipment isn't strewn across the inventory.
