In the videogame, they made it even easier.
The reverse also works if you play rogue and have a tank with you to take the hits.
Edit - Which makes the early game suck hard as the enemy benefits from the same rules, are more numerious, and are generally the rogue class.
Admittedly I've only played TT 3.5 not path finder but that felt like a bad interpritation
That is an understatement. It is a horrible interpretation, caused by the lazyness of devs not properly programming the game to identify exactly when someone is or is not flanked. And not to mention the fact that everyone has the Ranged Flank feat.
However, in a RTwP game, flanking positions change fast as everyone is moving at the same time. This might have caused the use of sneak attack pretty hard to accomplish and so they decided to make things easier for players that like to play with rogues. But why archers have Ranged Flank, that I cannot imagine.
