having some troble with quest The Lost Brother since i have no idea how to complete this

Exactly how is the location of Shallow Gulch revealed? Do I need to find something in Varnhold first? Or does it just get discovered when walking by? I've made several attempts to do both, and Shallow Gulch will not appear on my map. (Yes, I'm past the point where the guards escort you.)

Nevermind... I tried again, bringing a character with higher perception (over 20), and was able to find the location.

Ok so I got the quest, found the location but can't reach it.

Do I have to wait for something or is it a bug ?

The last time i tried to find it, it was some patches before. I could not find it, were running around like a rabbit on speed and it was not appearing. It has to do with perception ability and whatever. You need to make sure, to solve this, at a very early point after you are allowed to adventure in the area of Varnhold, or otherwise this whole quest fails.

In my case, i got the quest some time, before i got some letter from Lizi, and could not enter there. then i got the letter, and i was able ot roam around the area or Varnhold, but this special area was not appearing. After some patch and long after the quest had already failed, this area was suddenly appearing. You can still visit this area then and make some quest related stuff, but as it was already marked as failed, nothing more was happening in my case.

The quest "The lost brother" can be started before you have access to the territory you need to go to becomes available. Once you are asked to go to Varnhold to investigate the vanishing you should have access to the territory. The specific area you need to go to is hidden and will only show up and be accessible if you have a high perception.
Once you have been at the location you simply need to bring the letter back to the brother who is waiting in the inn of your capital

Also be sure to go to Tavern before the Throne room if...

You already completed Vordakai before going back to the capital cause the quest fails if you don't talk to him

The great grandfather is an optional fight in one of the areas where you go while searching for the sisters (the area with all the floor switches)

I bought the game on GOG if anyone is wondering. I think this quest is still bugged. Varnhold kicked off, I went to the place where the brother is and the quest updated to report in. However, there's no option to bring up the matter with the brother. I did the Sisters quest, found the great-grandfather letter, turned that in. No joy on the missing brother though, I doubt I can finish this quest.

Is request to investigate separate from a letter of invitation from Maegar? Still, I should have had it, given it's only 20 days or so left till the next Bald Hill event?

The invitation is to go to Varnhold and have a chat with Maegar. You will be escorted there by the guards when you try to cross to Varnhold and then escorted back. You wont be able to explore.

The request to investigate is the beginning of Act 4. If you want to visit Maegar you will have to do that before then.
