Heavy Shield and casting?
Is there a penalty for using heavy shields and a weapon while casting a spell in this game? Normal pathfinder rules says can't use a weapon + a heavy shield and cast, has to be light shield or buckler.

All shields have an arcane casting penalty, I think heavy shields are 15% and light shields are 5%. The spell failure reduction from arcane armor training should offset that penalty.

I'm not sure that is accurate. I know if you're wearing locked gauntlets that your hands aren't free to cast spells, but heavy shields just have a steep arcane spell failure rating attached to wielding them as their penalty for arcane spell casters.

Edit: Ah, right, the free hand necessary to provide somatic components. I'm not sure that the game tracks that, to be honest.

Talking about bards and clerics here. I know about the Arcane failure chance. Asking about the free hand to cast spells with somatic compoment.
Yea, I don't think you need to worry about that in this implementation of the ruleset.

Apart from the arcane failure chance, there are no restrictions to a spell caster using a shield.

you can wear armor and cast spells yes, even wield a weapon but you do incur spell Failiure. Whole EK is based around that idea, but if you want to cast spells and wear armor i always suggest the Magus it's a really solid class.

Most computer games do not implement that rule for some reason, I bet you can even give your wizard or cleric a weapon in each hand and he could still cast his somatic spells.
