If you mix with other classes with access to animal companions(Druid, Mad Dog Barbarian, Sacred Huntsman, Cleric with Animal domain, Ranger), they will still contribute to it's growth.
My current playthrough is with an Arcane Trickster Sage Sorcerer, it definately gains more form Rogue and Arcane Trickster. I just got Improved Invisibility; between that, sense vitals, and Impromptu Sneak attack, my rays are doing an extra 7d6 on nearly every attack at level 9.
I'm playing solo, so no ganging up; improved invis gives me sneak attacks as long as they don't have a way to see me, and four impromptu sneak attacks do well for the rest.
