Hit point calculations
Hello,
I have a level 2 Barbarian (Armored Hulk) with 27 hp maximum. I do not understand why he has 27 hp? Please correct my math if I am wrong. So barbarians get 12 hp per level plus their constitution modifier. My barbarian's constitution is 16, so that yields a +3 modifier. The barbarians hp should calculate as follows: 12hp + 3hp = 15 hp per level. My barbarian is level 2, therefore he should have 30 hp correct? Why does he have 27 hp? My other characters are like that as well.

Thank you.

The hit dice isn't per-level. You get full HP on the first level and then you get average per level. So for a Barbarian, it'd alternate between 6+CON Mod and 7+ CON Mod. (so you get the average of the hit dice roll, rather than automatically getting the max possible)

The alternative would be rolling that hit dice for each level. I can't recall being in a tabletop game of Pathfinder on the Paizo boards that didn't use this average option.

For more examples of this - a fighter would get 10+CON at first level and then alternate between 5+CON and 6+CON since they have a d10 hit dice. Wizards/Sorcerers would be 3+CON and 4+CON thanks to their d6 hit dice, etc.

As Shadow88 said. You don't get 12 hp per level as barbarian, but 1d12 for 1-12. After level1 you get the average for your class from the die roll.
If you want to see the math behind this, I found this on an old forum thread (and I mean old - this was for DnD 3.5, the thread's from 2002[forum.rpg.net]).

How you do it: If n is the sides of the dice, then the average roll is:

(n+1)/2

Since this always gets you a result with a half left over (so do it to a d10 and you get 5.5) and DnD/Pathfinder doesn't deal in "half a hit point", this is why you alternate between the numbers on either side of that result (a 5 and a 6 in the case of a d10).

The usual for PF/PFS is "half-max"+1 per level with full hp @ level 1.

Apparently, they "silently" added the favoured class bonus hp (1/level).

So we have : Level 1: 12 ( max) +3 (con) +1 favoured class. Level 2: 7 (half max+1) + 3 con + 1 favoured class.

Sums up to 27.

Oh yeah; forgot about favoured class bonus. +1HP per level in the first class you take is how it was implemented into Kingmaker.

Can someone tell me why my Amiri has got such a strange Hp progression:
My Amiri currently is 2 Barbarian/ 1 Freebooter, with 40 HP and i wanted to test how hitpoints would change depending if i i get a lv in Barbarian or Freebooter.
If i go Barbarian she will have 52 Hp as 3 Barbarian/ 1 Freebooter.
If i go Freebooter she will have 51 Hp as 2 Barbarian/ 2 Freebooter.

So i don't understand this. Barbarian has 12 HD while Freebooter(Ranger archtype) has 10 HD. It seems that HP progression per lv is (1/2 HD+1) /2 rounded up + Con Mod + fav class bonus(+1) + other optional bonuses... this correct?

It just makes no sense. Barbarian should always 1 more HP but fav class bonus would give Amiri another +1 but she gains only one HP more than she would have with Freebooter.

Edit: they only explanation could be that u also get the favourite class bonus if u rise a class to the same lv as your hightest class?! could it be that? it would explain the small difference in hitpoints... but seems strange

another test:
My Valerie being Lv2 Warrior/Lv1 Monk, 40 Hp, default attributes 19 con
I try to level her to Lv3 Warrior. I get 52 Hp.
I try to give her a Lv of the Ranger class instead.... Hp still 52... lol makes no sense
why should she have same Hp with a dip in ranger compared to increasing her fav class, does ranger have a D12 in this game?
raising monk lv still same results 52 Hp...
, dip in slayer also 52 Hp...
wizard dip actually decreases the Hp to 50 but that dpesnt explain why she get the fav class bonus on everything, actually it seems there is no fav class bonus as anything gets this... so formula seems to be (1/2 HD+1) /2 rounded up + (Con Mod +1) + feats

edit: tested with main and there is no fav class bonus at all, rather a fake one as no matter what u increase u are always going to get a "fav class bonus" of +1 on hitpoints, correct me should i be wrong tough! (: i wonder if this is a bug

everything in DnD is always rounded up, unless specifically stated otherwise.

good to know but why does one get +1 hp on every level up what is supposed to be the fav. class bonus naturally? ive tried to explain that fav. class bonus doesnt exist in the game, every class gets it on every lv up and prob also on lv 1, doesnt matterwhat your hightest class is or the class u started in
InEffect Jul 15, 2021 @ 12:10pm
yes, that's exactly how it is. There are no favored classes, so it's just a flat +1 to every level.

oh ok, i've seen several threads which state there IS a favored class bonus u get when u stick to your main class/hightest class but apperently there IS NOT
