Failing A Quest?? - Cause a BUG or NOT?

Right, due to failing it .. i went off and read up on the quest ( errr my quest went nothing like
that ), I had never been to the area before coming investigate .. killed everything in the area.. entered the Barn piled on to the Trolls, Barth Goes down ( i was expecting him to pick himself up like the merchant did on telling me about the mage ) and but afterwards does his dying speech and i get a Failed X ( though some nice items). I get the quest to find the whip, but, errmm he`s dead so what do i do with it?? So i made a plan, with a lot of luck, rushed in sent 2 healers with big heals at him , and then kept healing, whilst the other 4 took out the trolls. Now does it matter if you fail a quest? He has a couple of nice items especially the +4 head piece ( my mains a wizard ). Now i read also that this quest can bug out .. I normally take my punches and take the failure ( cant win theme all ).

Now do i take the failure? or will the quest sequence bug out? ( Whip? )
Or keep him alive? ( or will it still bug out as never visited him before? ), If everything finem does he become a vendor again? as i read he has a cheap BoS

Ha, I had almost the same just recently. In my case Bartholomew is alive, I've managed to kill the trolls before they killed him, but still I got a failed quest. At the same time I got the quest for the whip, and then after the trolls chapter I got him to go to my capital and he's now in the throne room waiting to become an advisor. Yet, that quest ("The Nature of the Beast") is marked as failed.

Well... ok, I am sure i got a Green tick when i saved him... but just loaded the saved game and it is the same as you, now Red X .. though he is alive.. ah well see what happens
