So if you can, reload a save before the battle preparation.
If you have never played the game and you are attempting your first playthough on hard level, then you have answered your own question on why you are finding it unbeatable.
If you completed something like pillars of eternity 2 on Insane and came here - grac, you are ready to ultra easy mode in pathfinder cuz this game does not **** around.
It will 1/20 out of u like 100500 times till you cry like a Harrim
Come now, that's a bit of an overstatement. Pathfinder is hard at the beginning, but anyone who beat PoE 1/2 on Insane is more than ready for Hard/Unfair in this game. My own first playthrough was on Hard, and it was only difficult until my first Haste spell, after which the difficulty doesn't matter anymore. And Unfair isn't that far off, too.
It becomes easier at chapter 2-3.
And if u play RTwP , not TB combat... well... multiply hardiness by 1.5
