(It is definitely possible, that was how it resolved the first time for me)
It is true that you can not claim the eye in the tomb for yourself, but you definitely can have tristian destroy it in the tomb (which will impact later quests).
had him in the party and was of lawful good alignment.
In the battle against Vordakai when Tristian seized the eye I had the option to tell him to destroy it (though I do not recall what the wording exactly was, it is possible I told him not to take off and he decided the only way was to destroy it).
Which one of those factors mattered I can not say, but it is definitely possible ^^'
I had Tristian smash the eye in Vordukai's tomb as a True Neutral PC. I'd completed his companion quests up to that point and just told him to smash it when he goes crazy after beating Vordukai.
I really have to get him to smash it in the tomb, because I know that's required for later when you want to lift the curse from Nyrissa. As far as I'm concerned the whole game depends on that one instance, and I've never been given the dialog option at all. Just "give me the eye" and "ill kill you" are my only choices.
Events inside the tomb might have had some bearing on this outcome, but the key difference is that Tristian was there during the tomb.
