Butter
That's right BUTTER, as in the condensed fat from a cow's milk, that you spread on your toast.

I love butter, I'm sure you do too, unless you're lactose intolerant. (Your bigoted lack of tolerance has been dully noted. :))

Butter costs 20gp, that's a 0.25 lb for 20 gp. A pound of butter costs you 80 gp. And 5 pounds of butter will cost you 400 gp.

Do you know what else will cost you 400 gp? A masterwork Longsword.

Now I love butter, don't get me wrong. But I can't imagine anyone in the history of anywhere, where 5 pounds of butter are worth a MASTERWORK weapon of any sort.

Just saying...

These are the same adventurers who were convinced that they need brand new camping supplies every time they want to camp somewhere. New tents, cookware, etc. I think the merchants are just screwing with us.

How abour Tyranny where an iron full plate armor costs a couple of iron rings?

I'm sure camping supplies (the consumable part of it) include mainly water and kindle.

They're not new supplies per say, it's food. 10 lbs of food per person, per day, who is physically travelling, isn't all that much.

Weigh all the food you eat today and see if 10 lbs is what you consume, just sitting in front of your computer.

Then consider traveling 30 miles by foot, with 60 pounds of armor and weapons, and how much would you consume then?

So I'll give them a pass on the 'supplies' portion. But 20 gp for a stick of butter? That's too much even for me, lol.

There isn't enough butter in the game!!!! Those recipes aren't going to butter themselves!!!

About 4 pounds, actually. 6 with water. On a similar note, my dad, maternal uncle, and maternal grandfather were all in the military. I know how much rations for a day weigh.

It was a joke.

Chill.

Well you see, the butter is mostly imported (or have you found a cow yet?) and there is no free trade agreement between the stolen lands and the neighbouring kingdoms. So naturally the price goes up. Just think of all the cooling that has to be done to move it to your friendly local store without the butter going rancid...

cooling? Like magically cooling? No, you do not need that. Butter is eatable for a very long time, even without cooling.

Nevertheless, prices in fantasy games are seldom logically. In AD&D, you can hire sellswords for a few bucks a day, but then checking out the prices around makes you think, that they cannot live of that money at all. Paying like 10 gold (or more) for some room, 15 gold for some meal, and whatever.... This whole topic destroyed the Pillars of Eternity game completly for me, as i was thinking about it and recognized, that it does not work out at all. In this game i deceided to not think about it at all, as i want to enjoy the game.
I had this topic with somebody, who was deeper in the game involved, and he explained to me, that the whole economic system is made like this, that the devs calculate, how much money is around and what they should do with it. There is a reason, why butter costs more then a soldiers life is worth. This whole economy does not fullfill any logic but to be part of the gameplay of the player.

Back in my day, you could get two pounds of butter for three copper pieces.

LOL Truth! I find myself stopping by every tavern and town all over the map looking for butter.
The Witcher 3 is pretty bad for that kind of economy as well!

I'll say this much, hoard your butter. It's used in so many damn recipes and there seems to be a very limited supply?
Why can't we get more of this instead of silver earrings and crap like that
