Selecting the group + right clicking was the best method to start combat unless i was ready to ''delay'' a character action, like a archer, by making him start combat.
For a better result, have as many characters as possible do the same thing to start combat, and only the character that hit first will "lose" their surprise round turn. For example, have multiple characters shoot with the same ranged weapon (so it has the same animation speed and they all go off at once) or a similar spell.
If you get good at the timing, you can have spells/attacks of different speeds all go off at once, but it may take some practice and experimentation to get it down. Remember that spells with travel time like Fireball are good candidates because you can have some in the air when you start combat and they'll still go off without affecting the casters' surprise round.
