How to recruit Bartholmew Delgado?

I checked the wiki....but is weird.

When I first met him, there was no troll attacking him. Instead, I warned him about troll immune to fire and etc, helped him killed a troll he trapped and demand him to release a troll he captured. He gave me acid arrow before that.

After which I proceed to clear the troll castle. I then return, he is safe and sound but he is packing up.

Should I have waited for an day for him to be attacked? O.o

You need to allow him to continue his experiments, then in a little while the trolls will attack his hut for which you will have a throne room event. If you manage to save him, he'll ask to find a whip. Do so and you can convince him to stay and join your court.

I think the part where you told him to release the troll is what broke him for you. No experiments without test subjects.

Triggering the event where trolls attack his hut is definitely not necessairy. You can simply visit him 1 time and talk to him in his house (after the stone troll thing) - finish the troll questline immediately afterwards by killing their chief and then visit him again and tell him to come work for you.

Have done that twice^. Did allow him to keep the troll everytime tho.
Cant quite remember if this would make you miss out on the whip quest or where exatly that fits into his scenario. I skipped the whip quest in those runs^ - so its not required either way.

I always do the troll attack thing cause it's quite a bit of free exp(mainly from respawning traps), so idk if that's needed. Better safe than sorry. And I sometimes want a second arcane protector anyways(and I don't want a psycho garden implement in my party).

I didnt make it in time to his location before it got invaded. So when I got there, place was ridden with branded Trolls, i found poor Bartholmew in a dangerous situation with 4 trolls bashing his head in his basement. Was able to save him nonetheless due to turn based combat. He then send me on an errand to find his BDSM dildowhip, which I destroyed despite Octavia's disapproval. Then I asked him to join as an advisor (seem he had forgot about his whip for some reason).

It is timed, if you go early the only thing you need is to allow experiments then finish 2nd chapter main quest before he gets attacked. If you wait and he gets attacked you need to save him and get him the whip.

I beg to differ, I went and got the whip but I destroyed it, was still able to get him as an advisor.
