is this Viscount Smoulderburn light orb thing a joke?
All it does is fear me and my rolls never allow me to hit so I miss and then im feared and run away and then he just fears again and and again and again. Doesn't help when the fear adds -2 to me as well.

What the ♥♥♥♥ is this?

It is a test of the player's ability to process contextual clues by declining to activate the encounter. Failing the test is supposed to make things difficult, as it did for the corpses strewn around the campsite.

You should wait until your group is lvl 6 or higher: his fear cannot affect lvl6+ characters (but he tries anyway, wasting his rounds) so the fight becomes trivial. Companion quests will take you back to Old Sycamore later, which is a good moment to kill the wisp too.

remove fear and unbreakable heart are a thing. He is pretty beatable by 3-5 on unfair depending on the party comp with a few resist electricity pots and whatnot.

Yes he is meant to be a joke.

You KNOW you shouldn't rest there, you KNOW it is a bad idea, but like the big shiny red button - you just have to push it.

And BOOM :)

After my initial rage.

I will go back and try and beat it.

Nah, just wait until you are like level 8 and then go smash him : Jokes on you, floaty face !

Same with the Ratlings, hit them somewhere around level 9 - revenge is sweet :)

I think you can magic missile him hard if you have a mage with it. I usually skip him for later really as others have advised. Not worth the waste of time.

if you hit him with magic missile he casts shield, so it's better as a finisher, but otherwise does more harm than good. True strikes are his bane.

I actually loved it.
Btw, it is him who killed all the ones sleeping there, it's a trap and it's supposed to kill everyone.

I didn't have protections or strategies except not sleeping there, there is a lot of dead people there for a reason.

Btw, I simply put the difficulty to story mode, let Valerie tank (he does 1hp damage on story mode) and kept on healing her.
After a century he died (as he could only be hit by a natural 20)

Jeathal with healing Judgment and Resist Energy - Electricity. Easy cheese, just leave it on 1vs1 for few minutes.

If you mean at Ratnook, I did that at level 5 on Unfair. Buff up, sneak in, then get Linzi & Octavia to cast Glitterdust to the left and right in front which will light up the two sneakers and hopefully blind them to boot. Make sure everyone has some protection against fire to make the Alchemist trivial - he doesn't try anything else.

JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU HEAR THE BELL IF YOU DON'T DISARM IT AND REST! All their buffs will be gone.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills repeating this!

The bells, the bells, Jack.

You can use a scroll of protection against lightning and it will never deal any damage.
After that it's simply a matter of time until you roll enough 20s to kill it.
You can also cast 1/2 projectile-type spells to deal some damage before he counters with shield.
