Right click on it in your inventory to learn the recipe and it's gonna disappear after.
Recipes you have to write them into your cookbook. Right click the item and copy down recipe. The recipe will go poof afterwards disappearing from your inventory.
It's a bit confusing but when you start to set up camp, there's actually a Manage button at the top left. There you can set up where you want your members to work and what to cook for. While there are supposedly extra benefits to cooking food in which your characters enjoy, I find it redundant as you'll most likely be either cook the Hearty Meal as it requires no materials and I'm too lazy to carry extra materials for my DPS to increase that little bit amount. I guess on extreme difficulties every +1 matters but as it stands, completely pointless.
Yes, thats the standard AUTO view. There is a MANAGE button at the top above the portraits which will lead to that customization screen posted above.
