What seems important is that Tristian and Jaethal make the right decisions that make them understanding of one another in the House.
That seems to be that Tristian has to remain mortal (thus more nuanced and still open to learning more) and not become a Celestial again right away. I'm not sure if the Eye decision has an impact or Betrayer's Flight.
Jaethal needs to make selfless, natural and merciful decisions (not ressing elf girl) during her quests. This causes her to be blown up by her Goddess and becomes sponsored by another. This should also appease Tristian.
So yes explosion = good companion quest ending for her. You're going to have to wait and see if it turns out right at the House at the End of Time. The Tristian and Jaethal questlines throughout the game were the buggiest parts in the beginning. A lot of work was done to correct all the problems so it should work now as intended.
Did the same things and it worked out for me. Also like mentioned by Balekai, i kept Tristan mortal.
Sounds to me then that the key has only to do with Jaethal's final quest decision. If you can get her to redeem herself then all is good. Or that in addition to Tristian being redeemed in the eyes of his Goddess. So as long as you get those two things in their questlines you're ok.
Jaethal mentions you convincing her to turn from Urgathoa, which pleased Pharasma. She also mentions a mutual acquaintance of yours. A chosen of Pharasma putting in a good word for her. I don't know if that's the Inquisitor that tried to kill her or the more famous one that was at the Castle of Knives that you possibly help (likely the latter who I did help). She also mentions how the illusion seemed fake because Tristian always tries to save everyone, including the Priest of the Kingdom of the Cleansed (You have to convince him not to kill his daughter).
Tristian mentions how you showed mercy to the Kingdom of the Cleansed (letting them go when you could). He does mention that he remembers you convincing Jaethal to turn away from Urgathoa which stayed his hand.
