Your CG ruler may not want Bart as an advisor. His advice is not only strongly LE-aligned, but is also often flat-out short-sighted and stupid. (As opposed to Kanerah, another LE treasurer candidate, who gives much smarter advice.)

As for whether you can win back Bart's trust at this point...I'm not sure. A lawful character definitely could; there's an alignment-restricted conversation choice where you apologize to Bart and promise not to impede his research in the future. As a CG good character, you might be able to win back his trust if you both save his life from the trolls, and also return his whip.

(On my CG playthrough, I made Bart kill the troll test subject, and let Octavia keep the whip. I visited Bart one last tim, as he was packing his things to leave the barony; nothing I could have said at that point would convince him to stay...even if I had wanted him to stay, which I didn't.)

Much better at this point, if you have Octavia with you, let her speech without interfering, gives at least some loot.

Yes, you can.
Just ask him to stay when he is packing to leave and he will stay.
Never had him as a treasurer btw, even in my actual (CE) run I made him Grand Diplomat, leaving the treasury to Kenarah.

I tried that, but failed. I am playing a CG ranger, made Bartholomew release the troll, came back and saved his life (ironically killing the very same troll), retrieved the whip and returned it to him and still when I asked him to stay he declined. I did not find any option in that conversation to convince him otherwise. Also, there was no way to apologize; in any case, as stated above this seems to be alignment-restricted (although, according to this Guide[www.gamerguides.com] it is a neutral choice, not a lawful one). Did I miss some hidden diplomacy check or something?

Maybe I should't have looted his hidden stash before... he might just have had enough of my constant interference with his work and lack of respect regarding his "property" :-p
I had Octavia with me and all I could do was either let him go or let him being driven nuts by her insolence and attack me. I eventually chose the latter; at least it was fun seeing him explode and worth some nice loot ;-) A pity you do not get the whip back in that case - which makes no sense, but was obviously not implemented.

In my last run (the one I referred in my previous post) I haven't had the whip quest. Also I'm not sure I had to save him...after our first meeting I was quick to end the chapter main quests, so if a I remember well he hadn't any trouble with trolls.
I don't know..maybe I run into a bug..let's see what happens in my actual run. :S

Thanks everyone, the option to apologize and get him to stay was indeed neutral and he wouldn
t joing me (despite saving him from the trolls and returning the whip), so i let octavia do her thing...
