Graphics Engine
So....

Looks an interesting game but Is this game Unity based? Unity = no buy as far as I am concerned.

Eztrelle, It is based on the same engine as Cities: Skylines, Ori and the Bright Forest, Enter the Gungeon, Dream Daddy, Super Bomberman R, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Punch Club, Sunless Sea, and I am Setsuna. Does that Answer your question?

It certainly does. Oh well, nevermind.

So what ? Using Unity does not prevent making a good game.

If you look back at the earlier kickbacker updates, the design team did showcase the changes and systems they added to the game engine.
Its not the basic unity engine.

There are many bad unity engine games, cos many game companies don't put the effort the make the most the game engine and just copy and paste assets into the game.

Yes Unity. I'd suggest reading up on the updates to the Unity engine over the years, or you'll be missing out on some awesome games.

Unity is a underrated engine, but it is/was THE choice for many esteemed CRPGs in the last years.

My main problem is that Unity games tend to have memory leaks and performance issues (for example making your video card really hot).

Fair enough. This tendency is a case to case decision, it just isn't predestined. When it comes to performance, one thing is for sure: optimization is always good. And, well, on the other hand there is this fatalism: everyone is accountable for his own system. Can't play a modern shooter on a table calculator. Unless you're McGyver :-)

Doom on every device!

As Wingstorm touched on, I think Unity got a bad rep because it was built to be easy to use. So, in the early days of the engine (and some still), a lot of 1-2 person indie devs with little experience made non-optimized games.

I remember when I was playing Wasteland 2 first, my GPU fans went crazy more than in Witcher 3 and later I've find out it was Unity graphics :f2_unsure:

This is the issue with Unity. Memory Leaks and driving your GPU crazy for what are very average looking graphics when compared to the output from Unreal 4 and CryEngine.

It makes me sad because I love some of the games that are/were developed using Unity like Battletech and Battlestar Galactica both of which are really good games in my opinion but spoilt by the engine used to develop them.

Well, the beta, which should by definition be less optimized, isn't doing anything crazy to my 960 at highest settings. They're not kidding when the recommended GFX is 960M

I remember in early development, the community manager had it running (barely, but still) on one of those portable web-browser/word processor laptops.

I think that they just built it well...I guess companies do that sometimes. :2016whoadude:

Hope isn't lost for Unity.
