Kingdom Management While Traveling
Sometimes I can acess the management button in the bottom right while traveling away from the capital and other times its just gone and I don't know how to bring it up.
What am I doing wrong or what causes it to be sometimes avalible?

When you are inside the borders of your claimed regions, you can access kingdom management. You can take a look your borders from kingdom management screen and plan your actions correspondingly.

It's also worth noting -- I didn't know this until someone pointed it out -- is that there are three levels of kingdom control, not two.

At your capitol: You can do pretty much anything, including meeting with advisors and visitors.

At a town which is not your capitol: You can't meet with people, but can stsrt work on any project, problem, or opportunity. (Including things like rank upgrades and territory claims, which take your baron/ess out of play for two weeks.)

Anywhere in your claimed territory: You can start work on most issues, but not on things that take your baron/ess out of play.

The thing I didn't know until recently is the "any town" level of control.

Thanks a lot for the detailed breakdown, I appreciate it.

Also worth noting that the "borders" are bit flakey at times. Some places near the edge you're clearly in a region and it thinks you're not and vice versa. (it seems to be consistent but not always as you'd expect)
Or you could use a mod that just lets you do it from anywhere ;p

This is one of those (many) by-design things which I understood, but doesn't make any logical sense or need to be there, and detracts from the overall game experience. Ie: This is a failure in game design.

It doesn't make any sense because if you can manage your kingdom on the road (presumably via messengers, before you are high enough level to have magic message sending), it should "turn off" when you cross the street.

It detracts from the game experience because it means you're constantly having to backtrack to check the status of events, and/or make sure you don't miss some critical end-of-month one-day-to-fix problem, when you really just want to be exploring. This is doubly true during end-of-chapter events, when you're ping-ponging between the critical story mission and your claimed lands, so you don't get screwed by the random curse event timing.

It's one of many examples of frankly just bad game design, in a game with many other reasonably good elements (eg: music, characters, story, implementation of Pathfinder system, etc.), but also many glaring flaws (open beta "release", pacing, encounter "balance", incomplete companion quests, and so many game design blunders it's kinda astounding).
