Will Pathfinder: Kingmaker Ever Be Mac Compatible Again?
Ok, so I updated my mac to Catalina, I didn't think anything would happen from it. Just the typical Apple Update. Turns out I was wrong. Catalina doesn't run 32-bit apps. Which means I can no longer play almost half of the games I own, including this one. Are the developers working on making it compatible again or am I at the mercy of Apple's BS software decisions? Any advice or insight?

I updated to Catalina and can still play this game. There are some graphical glitches at times but can't remember if they started with the update or not.

32 bit games will not be updated to 64 bit.

How? Does Steam still let you install games even though they're not compatible?

Apple made the deliberate decision to stop supporting 32-bit apps which means many thousands of games will no longer run on Catalina. Many people believe this wasn't a sensible decision, but it is the decision they made and your problems with PK are unfortunately one of the consequences.

However all is not lost, see this link [www.pcmag.com] which outlines some options for playing PK after upgrading to Catalina. All have a cost in time or money (or both) but they will get the job done.

The easiest way a Mac user can run games is to buy a PC. For the cost of a used 27 inch MAC thunderbolt monitor you can have a starter gaming rig.

I haven't tried to install a 32 bit game since updating. Pathfinder was already installed and it continues to work as mentioned. That would suck if Steam prevents 32 bit games from installing.

I reinstalled it, Its strange that it doesnt work and just bounces and makes me force quit. Both Planetscape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 1 work fine, despite the update. What did you do?

IIRC Beamdog updated its games to 64-bit with patch 2.4 which means they should function normally in Catalina. This issue has nothing to do with Steam "not letting you" install 32-bit games, it has to do with Apple deciding it no longer wants to be compatible with 32-bit games. So now it will be hit and miss and when you try to run a 32-bit product: some won't start at all, some will experience huge time delays, some will have in-game glitches, etc.

Owlcat hasn't said whether it plans to convert PK to 64-bit. However you should know that from a coding point of view, it isn't just a matter of replacing all 32s with 64s, there can be significant issues depending on exactly how an app was coded. No idea how much work it would be for PK in particular but it might take weeks rather than hours of dev time to do the conversion.

I had some issues with the game after updating to Catalina (for example the game still won't quit properly, it just drops into the desktop background and stays open even after I force quit it) and I also ran into the "game won't start" problem, that you describe. The solution was to wait for another 10 minutes and than the game finally started. I think catalina checks the game the first time it is started due to it's security "features", and as Kingmaker is quite a large application this takes forever. Just let it run once, be patient and eventually it will start. You might check the activity monitor for a process called syspolicyd hogging up the cpu. If you see that, than you found the culprit.

The game does work on Catalina despite what the steam store says. The first time you run it takes a LOOOOOOOOONG time, but after that there is no problem.
