Did you take the deal with Ioseph, where he'll give you 500 BP? That does help, but you need to get your treasurer to unlock the deal... and it's consequences. You can get one a few weeks into chapter 2. Just search around for guides to get them.
Depending on your alignment/how you want to roleplay you can also pillage the temple of elk for a bunch of BP.
Eventually, once you're flush with cash, you can dump tons of money into BPs, but I wouldn't worry too much about it right at the beginning of chapter 2.
At the beginning i spent most of my money for BP and get most of the equipment through questing. I think, up to chapter 4 i bought like 3 better items. (except of food, bags, magic scrolls and such stuff).
But its not must. I think, you could beat the game without buying one single BP. I would not try it, but it should be possible.
With the DLC you can also blow unwanted BP on planar goods (= +5 gear) at 650 BP apiece. It is mostly worse than artisan stuff, but the rare miscellaneous item is welcome (greater rod of maximize). That starts after the crowning, but you are not that rich before anyway.
