Your character doesn't have an AI, he follows the default. So first you have to enable spells as a casting option in settings and then you have to ensure that his hit chance with spells is better than his melee weapon. He's running in with melee because you're denying him the right to cast.

It's also easier to just equip a crossbow on him and have that as his default weapon.

Press 'h' at the start of combat to make your selected characters hold position. There should also be an AI toggle button right below the stealth toggle on the right side of the action bar at the bottom of the screen, which should turn off companion AI for the selected characters.

Equip him with a ranged weapon?

There should be a button on the bottom right of the character portraits panel when you have him selected. It's next to the stealth button and looks like a head. That's the character AI on/off button.

I don't think the game has a Baldur's Gate style AI editor though.

Oh, I think I misunderstood, this isn't a companion, this is your main character? If so, a magus is supposed to cast a touch spell, then deliver it through his weapon, which should ideally have a large crit range (the multiplier of the weapon doesn't matter, spells always crit for x2, but the range does). They're a melee class and should be used as such. If you don't want to get into melee range, you really should just restart the game with a different class for your main character, but if you insist on sticking to a magus who doesn't melee, equip a ranged weapon.

There also is a magus variant in the game for ranged combat.

I do use melee attacks, but i only get to melee range after the enemy has engaged my tank or one of my melee attackers.
