Simple advice to new players.
This game is front loaded with difficulty. Meaning, the first levels are hard, then it eases off a bit. this is my suggestion to make the first few levels more managable:

When you get out of the castle, don't level up.
When you fight the bandits on the way into Oleg's, don't level up.
When you fight the second set of bandits trying to get into Oleg's, don't level up.
After you take your first nap at Oleg's don't level up.
Take another nap.
Go downstairs and talk to Eight Eyes.
Buy TWO clerics. They are dirt cheap at this point. only 500g per.
Buy any other class you might want to help out at this point, especially if you dont plan on using the other recruits in the game.

2 clerics in a team is awful, stop giving bad tips to new players please.

If the game is too hard early, there is no shame for newbie players to just play lower difficulties. You can even tweak them further down if you'd like. You can make enemies literally deal 0 damage to you and be an unstoppable god of murder if that's whats fun for you in this game. There is no need to try weird strategies as a new player. Play the game on easy, get your feet wet, and you can always turn the difficulty up/restart on higher difficulty if you feel up for it. This game has a ton of replay value from what I can tell.

That sounds like advice for people who are already good at games like this and are playing on a hard difficulty and struggling initially. I might be wrong, but I'm guessing most people who aren't super into the whole min maxing and (in this case very complicated) combat side of the game will want to use the game's prefab travel buddies as they have personalities.

Good call, but to clarify, this is probably only if you have Amiri, Valarie, Linzi, and a non-cleric Baron.

If you start with Harrim, then I'd suggest only getting 1 extra Cleric (still total of 2 like the OP suggested)

If you play the game right you will barely need healing so the 2nd cleric should be a dps. If you have to constantly heal, youre doing something very wrong.

Yeah, I only play on normal (though I upped one of the sliders a little), but it seems to me that it's much better in this game to just blast things down ASAP than to try to sustain with heals.

I'm guessing the reason for two custom clerics is so you can load them up with restorations, cures and removals and heal everything in one rest. Though there's also a difficult setting to do that.

I beg to differ. 6 dark clerics with selective channeling dark energy + undead summoning are the most op thing in the game.

Sound fun but really gimmicky. Average at best but it would definitively get the job done.
Also nowhere close to the topic, were talking low lvl and 1 or 2 clerics.

2 Fighters, 2 Clerics (Healing Energy + Selective Heals) 2 strong dps is pretty stupid op but not as badass as 6 dark clerics that focus on slaying the living and undead armies.

I get you're talking about a balanced team. I'm just saying clerics are op as hell in this game and you could beat the game with 6 of them. 2 wouldn't really hurt a team honestly.

Not to get personal here, but please ignore Mr Fred's advice. It's the equivalant of "git gud". You will get hit, you will get blinded, and poisoned, and take stat damage, and lots of other things.

Implying that you're bad at the game if you take damage is just BS, especially when talking about advise for new players.

All of which you can deal with one cleric. Did I said dont bring any cleric?

Teaching new players bad party compositions isnt help at all... he will create the 47th threads about dying to the troll king or the enraged owlbear because he cant kill stuff fast enough and cant keep up with the heals.

Is a good advice if you already have alot of dps and CC on you group. But better advice is to do what all that but instead of getting 2 cleric and one other, Just get the 3 custom character you group need, is will be just 1500G and will add 3 more companions to your ruster very early and more to choose later in game.

How to actually win the game:

- Druid
- Cleric
- Wizard/Sorcerer
- your favorite form of melee dps carnage
- Bard

Spam buffs on the melee, watch him solo the game.
