favourite pet that isn't smilodon?
I really like the idea of centipede and stag seems really fitting for a druid.

Centipede is bad...real bad. Unfortunately. Vermin animal companions are real cool for being immune to mind-affecting magic. But the only ones really worth it are Giant Mantis and Giant Scorpion (maybe Giant Leech in a water environment).

Centipede goes squish too quickly. Love Elk and take it with Erastil animal clerics. Mastodon because of the cool sound for most of my companion based chars.

Leopard seems decent, it's medium sized and dex-based, making it one of the better tanks AFAIK. And it has a tripping attack. But I'm no expert on animals yet...

Leppers ez choices free trip to the ground xD plus it gets bigger allready at lv 4 which is huge. + medium size and speed makes it super ez to control

I like Giant Centipede with the Dex poison.. it does get squished fast tho and seems to get a lot of critical wounds

Dog. I don't care about the stats much but it seems like a pet someone could realistically have.

Leopard.

It starts small and then grows to medium size. I find the large pets run into pathing issues getting caught behind people in doorways etc and also cause traffic jams where the other melee have to walk all the way around them to find a place to attack.

Trip attack is baked into their bite. And two more attacks a round.

Speed. Holy crap these things are fast with a 50 move rate. They can close to enemy casters faster than anything else, except for a character purposely built for movement speed. If you have two leopards, they can tear through an enemy backline insanely quickly.

I tend to use them as "flanking calvary" and set my formation to characters moved to the right side of the formation. Tanks top right, melee middle right, ranged bottom right. And the two leopards on the bottom left. Even then they are so fast I sometimes have to get them to hold in place a few seconds, or they can beat the tanks to their targets.By setting it up left/right, there's usually a clear path to the enemy backline, or failing that, they both flank the same tanked target.

The only problem with Leopard is that the 'enchanced attacks' ability that is supposed to give +1 hit, damage and resist every 3 levels' isn't giving them the damage. So by the endgame they are missing about 5 damage an attack.

Once that gets fixed they will probably be the best overall IMO. Fix Finesse training for another +1 damage from using Dex instead of Str for damage.. Finally fix its Power attack (Elk has same problem) for another +3 damage.

It would go from D6+10 for damage to D6+19 putting it inline with the other Animal Companions.

Mastodon, because STR based pets get the most out of Size bonuses and can go easier through DR. Great AC too.

Leopard, for reasons already explained in previous posts, and I would highlight the tactical aspect from its extreme speed. I don't use the pet for damages so I don't care, and its resilience is very good that's what matter, it can even be a fair tank.

For the part where you are alone, he was definitely a very powerful tool, mainly thanks to its extreme speed.

And weight limits become a joke with a couple of them.
