Primal Shambling Mound Constant "Spell Lost"
Just ran into the Primal Shambling mound. Apparently I'm supposed to kill him with negative energy. Cool. The only issue is, I have now attempted 20+ castings of Inflict Moderate Wounds and Harm on him, and all have failed due to the 50% spell failure effect in his area. Other spells are working fine, I can buff and cast any spell that doesn't harm him to my heart's content, but the one energy type that hurts this thing appears to have be a guaranteed failure to cast. This is quite frustrating.

Did you try leading him to the area which doesn't have 50% failure? It only works in the area where plants are.

My advice. Skip it and just send a sneak to get the loot. I tried to kill it (about an hour ago) and couldn't. It went down easy enough but wouldn't die, no matter the damage. Unless you have Disenegrate per some forum posts, I only had 1, and with 50% fail, such I read online (or plenty of inflect major wounds maybe) no thanks.

I was also tried 3 cold-iron weapons, corrosive etc. ...I think it's not as intended. I did the two hard fights, including the devourer and Boss fight as well as the golems, so it was just weird.

Got him with a wand of Inflict Critical Wounds. Took 6 charges before it worked, but the mighty mound lies dead. Still feels like something is off with the failure percentages.

The spell failure comes from the New World vegetation area FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON. Which is unlike any other part of the game world where you go to the New World.

It's not indicated why, or how, no status icons to show you you're afflicted with a debuff, but it's that small region of vegetation.

And also for some inexplicable reason the Primal Shambling Mound needs Negative Energy damage to kill it, otherwise it continually regenerates like a troll.

What Beastiary does this monster come from? Nothing like that is in Pathfinder AFAIK. There are no hints, or warnings about some bizarre phenomenon, or creature that is unlike any other Shambling Mound.

I found this (major wound version) in my Barony inventory after I wrote this. I still wouldn't do it again. I mean, unless you know in advance which is completely wrong, for me. Unless it's suppose to be in the category of other unkillable/rarely killable things. The demons and certain events if you did something silly I understand.

The spell failure thing is fine with me if you don't *need* specific spells. It reminds me of one of the areas in NWN 2 where you couldn't use magic at all. Then again, it's optional so...

There is a status effect icon by the portraits with a tooltip.

I had the same problem. He wouldn't die and there was nothing to tell me why. Negative Energy isn't really a part of my party but luckily after reading this I used a scroll and finished him. Another option for those concerned about the 50% spell failure is you can try to kite him. There is an area around the corner outside of the plants influence so you don't have the 50% chance of failure. You can always kill him there.

Strength drain from Nok-Nok always seems to work

There was a status icon on my most recent play through, there wasn't the first time.

There are multiple weapons that do 'Necrotic' damage, which is shown as Unholy when you look at the info.

Just use Ciup de Grace and you can kill it. It may take a few times because of resistance.
