Second priority are the main quests, do them as fast as you can.
Last priority are kingdom actions that require you to skip time, only do these when you are finished with the main quests and the curse on the hill in not currently murdering you.
Of course there might be exceptions but those are the general rules as far as I know.
Events can appear all throughout the month but while you are in a claimed part of the map there will be a red exclamation mark on the kingdom management button when there is a new event.
Though you should at least check back to your kingdom once a month no matter what.
You should do projects so the time skip does not bring you to the next month, because new events might show up while you skip time.
Running events will always fail on the 1st of the next month if they dont have an advisor assigned.
Companions will generally talk to you, get an audience or you will get a letter that triggers the quest.
Some artisans will come to you by themselves and ask if they should serve you. To get the others you have to visit your settlements and talk with the named NPCs.
Orthogonnaly.
Edit: Assigning your companions as advisors and letting them handle events does not keep you from taking them on adventures.
Also try to fill all advisor positions as fast as possible.
