What level are you taking down the Stag Lord?
Title in question. I think part of this may be due to bugs or me beansing it, but I've been cruising until Stag Lord.

I thought was able to recuit / dissuade his followers, but I never got the chance to interact with any and now they're all stood with him making my party severly outnumbered.

Also I'm a bit suspcious of damage numbers from some of them, I'm seeing 1d10 +17, +23. That seems crazy for a lvl 4 encounter?

Any help would be appreciated!:steamhappy:

It's actually kinda easy. Just gain acess to the fort and sneak around the camp and slowly kill(or persuade) all his followers. By the time the battle started it was just him and 3 other goons while I had a party of at least a dozen people on my side.

Yeah I see I don't have that option apparently. Everyone's rallied at the front.

Have you met Keslar(Whatever her name is) and her squad of bandits? She'll insist to just directly storm the fort(Which is not a good idea lol), you can just tell her to wait till you've find some other access to the fort and sneak in. I've only found two ways of doing this so far ,either persuade the bandits to open the gate for you or climb the wall on the west.

4th level, with a party of five. Went in over the wall in the northwest part of the palisade, converted his second-in-command with some fast talking. Then painstakingly scouted the nearly the entire camp to locate the various groups of bandits before taking them all out one at a time. Brought 25 camp rations to feed my party when I absolutely needed rest to recover spells and abilities--you can camp safely, but not hunt at all in there--before proceeding; needed to do this three times.

It was a grind, but I got it done without letting the Stag Lord get an early warning, so it was just him and a handful of his goons from his HQ against my party, a pissed off owlbear, his turned XO, and that bandit girl I turned earlier (being merciful now sometimes pays off big later on).

Naw I killed her in the forest, which was fine I was intentional with that. I climbed the wall and clicked on the guy just inside to talk / recruit him but then he disappeared. And then when I went to clear the other guys they were gone and standing with Stag Lord

Level 4 -- went in the front door with a challenge to fight. My monk tanked the damage while my party slowly killed off the stag lords party. I was actually suprised when I beat him.

What I didn't realize is that the fort was bigger than this fight and there were enemies in almost every corner. It was tough to clear it out (and I could have skipped it I guess). I had spent all my buffs and heals on the stag lord fight.

Level 3 for most of my party, Tristian for some reason was level 4. I don't know why he joined my party at a higher level than the rest.

This was on slightly modified Normal difficulty where I made enemies do full damage to me, had normal stats, do normal crit etc. So a tiny bit harder than the default Normal.

Party was:

Eldritch Archer(?) - My character, not sure on exact class name but it was the long range magus
Tristian
Harrim
Valerie
Amiri
Octavia

Chugged through a lot of potions, burned a lot of scrolls, but the fight with him was actually the easiest out of all the fights in that camp because I had Kressle and the former no 2 guy as allies. The hardest fight was near the entrance with Bandit Bard, Bandit Brawler, Bandit Alchemist and Bandit(I assume archer since he was using a bow). The Bandit Alchemist hurts a lot.

Level 4 with Challenging/normal enemy difficulty.

Owelbear :) Run away. Owlbear.

Level 5. Cleared all areas and quests and farmed randoms up to level 5. Then killed him.

The game really does have front-loaded difficulty. As soon as you hit 4+ the game gets easier.

I think that is true of all DnD type adventures where you start at level 1. Think Baldur's Gate and dying to a random kobold arrow in the Nashkel mines. Or dying to a random ogre you met in the wilderness who you failed to escape from. Or worse, to a pack of gibberlings on the first wilderness map because both you and Imoen missed 10+ attacks in a row due to bad rolls.

In this game, on one of my campaigns, my paladin at level 6 just did the solo quest by killing everything as they miss him with like 95% of attacks and he uses lay on hands for the 5% of attacks that manage to hit.

My first playthrough of Icewind Dale 1, I spent the first few maps wondering where all the non player characters were - my Paladin archer was having a pretty rough time of it. It wasn't untill reaching level 6 I realised you, by default, generated 6 characters :)

I got him @ 5th level with me as a Gnomish Sylvan Sorcerer with Leopard, Valerie, Harrim (melee), Amiri, Linzi and Octavia on normal difficulty. I convinced his Right-Hand man to turn against him, I poisoned his wine and had Kessle and her mates join me.

I also killed half his Bandits before one of them managed to sound the alarm.

Strangely enough I didn’t actually do anything in his fight, all the NPC's killed him for me!

I had previously convinced Kressle and her group to stop working for the Stag Lord, this led her to actually oppose him and be outside the Stag Lords base when I arrived. Then, I entered the base from the east side and convinced his right hand to fight with me. Afterwards, I cleared the base of bandits and even calmed the owlbear so he becomes friendly during the fight.

The result was me having an army of NPC's while the Stag Lord has about 3 on his side. I literally just watched him die.

Humanoids tend to occasionally have crazy builds even at low levels, because they can use armors, magic items, spells and weapons.

It's called a Bard, Magus, Inquisitor, Cleric, Druid, Alchemist or some multiclass...

It's also because those NPCs don't have to be viable for 20 levels in a huge array of situations, conserving their resource usage, they can just specialize in the specific combat they appear in.
