You can in fact throw healing potions at the undead to damage them
-------------------
Torches and other blunt instruments do work (1 damage per hit) but you will struggle even on story mode without the flasks
It's also timed so you can't just come back later.
Normally I'd scold you for being so damn sarcastic, but that was kind of funny. Unless those are undead spiderlings, I suppose ...
-------------------
The Quest giver also sells flasks quite cheaply, 10gp a flask i think, you will need around ten to do it. Put the flasks on your belt and throw them at the swarms and watch how the spiders are in fact magical spiders who neither fear fire/heat and have a high immunity to fire. On a side note.....large bird eating spiders pop and hiss when you cook them; its how you tell when they are ready to eat.
-------------------
Yeah; as i said in the post its either evil bait by the developers or a balancing issue to have an obvious quest giving NPC who players are bound to follow to their death. Maybe the playtesters only ran through it on story mode difficulty......hard to know. If you google Pathfinder:Kingdom Spider Swarm is one of the first things to come up in the search list so its obviously a problem a lot of people are having issues with.
------------------------
The only issue really at the moment is the fact that swarms are treated as a single entity with a large hp pool and while you can comically kite them around while targeting them with AOE its just all too fiddly and comical to do currently. Reduce their hp pool so you can deal with them before they get to you at lower levels and nobody would have an issue with them. Or have someone with massive fortitude and fire imminuty attract them and just AOE where that poor sod is standing; also comical but equally silly.
To be fair I think you'll find that more RPG fans (especially CRPG video gamers) are familiar with D&D 3.5 or 5th ed than Pathfinder and it's alterations.
If there's one thing I've noticed so far in my gametime it's that there's a heck of a lot here that could be explained better in tutorials or even in the right click info boxes, and that using my D&D knowledge to try to intuite some things are leading me astray here and there.
I bugged out that swarm encounter when I did it. After reloading a bunch and trying different things I finally got in a situation where the swarms where jammed in a wall and stuck with broken AI or something, not attacking anything while I waited the ~minute or two it took for my torch wielding fighters to whittle them down 1 hp at a time..
Yeah.. pretty weird difficulty spike of an encounter to be one of the very first quests and introductions to the game I reckon.
--------------------------
Thats 4 flasks per swarm equating to about 12 in total but throwing them one at a time with three swarms, assuming the other one has spawned by now, on Normal difficulty or higher will lead to your characters quickly dying as the swarm pirahnas their way through your team
