Thanks, but it wasn't a demon or anything, maybe the negative levels? I am not sure...
Since scrolls are usually made at the lowest CL possible (which is 9th for 5th-level spells), your companion must have been dead for no longer than 9 days. You may have exceeded that time if you didn't raise him immediatly.
Later you'll be able to cast Resurrection (at 13th cleric level, not sure if they sell scrolls though), which raises a creature dead for 10 years per caster level. However, this comes at a much higher cost.
EDIT: Well, that's how It works in the tabletop version. I'm not sure It works the same way here, since Raise Dead scrolls don't seem to mention the days limitation.
