How does the 'Weapon Finesse' feat work?
It says when using light weapons you may use your dexterity modifier instead of your strength modifier on attack rolls.

Does this mean we can get rid of strength and go full dexterity with rogues?

What weapons count as light weapons?

How do you tell if it's actually taking effect? It doesn't seem to make a huge difference as far as I can tell.

Keep in mind its attack rolls. Not damage rolls. If you tank your strength you will take penalties on damage.

And I believe the tooltip says what weapons qualify. You can tell if its taking effect by just looking at the attack number on your character sheet.

To be honest, the game is sorely missing a "light" tag on weapons you can finesse.

This link has weapon tables, and will tell you if it's light or not:

Also - the Rogue class used in this game is the 'Unchained' version... Not only do they get weapon finesse for free, they also get Dex to damage at level 3.
Easiest way to remember is to think of light weapons as being the ones you always think of being based on precision - daggers and rapiers, for example.

Yes and this is great. But it would be pretty miserable getting to level 3 with a damage penalty on daggers. You'd be hitting for 1 damage most of the time. Personally I'd avoid going below 10 str on a rogue. But no reason to go higher either.

But keep in mind that is just for a single weapon type, not all light weapons. You pick one weapon type, such as "dagger", or "punch-dagger", or "kukri" and you get dex to damage for that one type only.

At level 11 and 19 you get to pick another weapon type.

Not sure if it's implemented this way in game, but as written from unchained, it's dex instead of strength. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Finesse Training (Ex)

At 1st level, a rogue gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. In addition, starting at 3rd level, she can select any one type of weapon that can be used with Weapon Finesse (such as rapiers or daggers). Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. Whenever she makes a successful melee attack with the selected weapon, she adds her Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier to the damage roll. If any effect would prevent the rogue from adding her Strength modifier to the damage roll, she does not add her Dexterity modifier. The rogue can select a second weapon at 11th level and a third at 19th level.

The thing is most ranged weapons have no damage roll modifiers. You use dexterity for attack rolls and that's it. However there are just a few ranged weapons which use strength for damage rolls and those are thrown weapons like sling and composite bows (short and long). So consider this.

Except that Weapon Finesse doesn't apply to ranged weapons at all. And since Finesse Training is keyed off of Weapon Finesse...

You can also get a weapon with the "Agile" magic tag.

Requirement: This special ability can be placed only on melee weapons usable with Weapon Finesse.

Agile weapons are unusually well balanced and responsive. A wielder with the Weapon Finesse feat can choose to apply her Dexterity modifier to damage rolls with an agile weapon in place of her Strength modifier. This modifier to damage is not increased for two-handed weapons, but is still reduced for off-hand weapons.

If that is true it's a good move.
The rogue is one of the weakest classes in the game..it is a tier 5 class and it desperately needed an upgrade ;)

The unchained rogue is MUCH better than the basic vanilla rogue. So much so that we've actually made unchained the default rogue, and ignored the core version altogether.

Question on weapon finesse and my monk

IF I decide to add 3 lvls of rogue to get this feat for free + being able to use Dex for dmg, how would I go about making this work with blunt weapons? (IE: just using my fists)

Is there a work around to make this work?

Theres no work around needed, if you pick the rogue levels or just pick up the feat weapon fineese it works with your fists already, and if you want to be a dex monk in act 2 you can get the agile amulet of mighty fists to add dex to damage.

its just 2 levels and you do get the sneak attack dmg too.

Interesting, I didn't see unarmed listed in the finesse list so thats why I asked. If anything, looking through rogue, my thoughts were on a potentially stronger crit build. Would it benefit me to go beyond lvl 1 rogue (like to lvl 3) for crit strike or will lvl 1 be enough?

I am just looking at making fun and interesting builds, not worried about the meta
