Read the tooltips right at the start, it literally tells you how to remove strength loss.
Most issues people have with this game can be fixed by reading.
Half the time, the tool tips are blank. I've had some strength loss where it just said -2 strength loss, and the rest of the tip was blank.
BUT you can also heal temporary abilitiy penalties with the spell "Lesser Restoration" which is a spelllevel 2 cleric (paladin 1) spell.
Yes, ability drain is normally very rare and is mostly caused by powerful undead creatures. I doubt that this is the case here, at least not in the first 2 or 3 "books" of the campaign.
To be fair, a loading tip does mention that "permament" doesn't mean "you can never get rid of this", but means "it won't wear off on its own, you have to do something about it".
It won't go away on its own in the way the game is implying. Normal damage to your attribute wears off in minutes or hours. "Permament" means unless you actually stop and rest (or your other methods), it'll never go away. It is a little awkward wording, but its probably more to blame the source material then this game in particular, its just the same terminology the tabletop uses.
