Hit Points
Why do some NPCs have such high HP at level 1? E.g. Valerie has 18 when I would expect 14.

When you level up is there any random rolling for new HP or do you get the high average or maximum automatically?

There are no random rolls on level up. You always recieve maximum class hit dice.

Valerie has 18 Constitution, which gives her a lot of HP.

Yeah I'd expect Valerie to have d10 max = 10, +4 for con = 14. Just wondering if Rathfinder is significantly different to D&D and 18 is correct. If so, why? Double Con bonus at level 1?

Linzi has like 12. Tough bard.

Valerie also has Toughness which gives 3 additional hp and probably a favoured class bonus which provides an extra hitpoint.

IIRC, Amiri starts with 19 and gets 11/level. 1d12+3, so she must be rolling 8's. At level 1, she must've rolled a 13 (toughness adds 3).
My Harriam has 2 more con mod than Tristrian, and both level 3 with 6 hp difference, so that checks out. Looks like Clerics roll 9's at level 1 and 6's at level-ups...
So yeah, I'd be up for a little more explanation on that.

Edit: Favored class for 1hp, then roll half+1 at level up! That explains it!

Linzi has not "like 12" but exactly 11. Which is 9 base HP + 2 HP due to constitution bonus.

Ok so there's some first level wierdness I don't fully understand then it's higher than average but not max roll for following levels? That would tally with what I'm seeing in game. Thanks.

There just some bonus HP which don't apply on (every) level up, that's all. Take toughness as an example:
You get +3 HP at level 1. And you get +1 HP for each level at level 4+. But on level 2 and 3 you don't get any additional bonus HP due to toughness.

Yeah. It's just one area where mousing over doesn't give you a breakdown of how it is calculated to make it clear what is going on. In character generation the hit die of the various classes is either missing or deeply buried. I'll just accept that the game is doing it right and short of taking the toughness feat or improving Con there's not much i can do to affect it.

My party is lvl 2, at Oleg's trading post:
My character is a lvl 2 fighter (20hp), with constitution 16 (6hp) and toughness (3hp). Should have 29hp, has 27.
Harrim is a cleric (16hp), with constitution 16 (6hp). Should have 22hp, has 21.
Linzi is a bard (16hp), with constitution 14 (4hp). Should have 20hp, has 19.
Amiris is a barbarian (24hp), with constitution 16 (6hp) and toughness (3hp). Should have 33hp, has 30.
Is my math wrong? Is there some modifier somewhere Im not finding?

1d12 +4 (con) + 2 rage

The hit points are not correct... no. There is stuff going on. We don't get full HP on level up. Either that, or they changed the HP amounts for "balance".... not sure why they'd do that. You'd think they'd keep true to the game.

I suppose they do 80% or as close as possible... but that's not quite right either. Ah well. There are more important issues they need to fix first. Like broken quests that make the game literally unplayable and our inability to hire extra party members.

akaik you always get the max roll on lvl 1 and after that it's rng die roll, but the rules may have changed in this or sometime in the last 3 decades.

I haven't seen anything in game that indicates what hit die (HD) a given class uses so I have defaulted to using the ones from the PF SRD: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/

For all of the characters I have, the sum of the following will calculate HP:
Max HD for first level.
Average rounded up per level after first.
Level times Con Bonus.
Miscellaneous bonuses (mainly Toughness, but there may be others)
1 HP per level.

So Amiri, at level 5, has 65 HP. A level 5 Barbarian with Con 16 and Toughness has the following:
Max HD (d12): 12
Average rounded up per level after first: 7 * 4 = 28
Level times Con Bonus: 3 * 5 = 15
Miscellaneous bonuses (toughness): 5
1 HP per level: 5
