Can you make a strength based monk?
Never played pathfinder before so I don't know if that's a viable option next to a dex monk

In Pathfinder they're using 3.5 rules, so you -have- to make a Str based monk, and a Dex based monk, also Wisdom is super important, and so is Con so you have health. They're Multi Attribute Dependant as hell in 3.5, 5E makes it where a dex focus is viable but in Pathfinder you can't use dex to calculate damage for unarmed, you use Str to calculate unarmed damage so all your Martial Arts attacks need Strength to do anything like decent damage, I think you could use Dex for your attack roll but the damage modifier is always Str IIRC.

yeah Monks are utter ♥♥♥♥ in 3.5 pathfinder because of how MAD they are

What do you guys recommend as a stat spread for a monk? I'm more used to 5e where monks really only need dex/wis/con

There's a 3rd party feat called Deadly Agility that give dex to damage. In pathfinder for monks to get dex to damage, they have to go with Agile enchantment on their amulet of mighty fist.

There was a work around for Slashing Grace before they nerf it so it won't work with Flurry of Blows anymore. There's a stance where they change your unarmed strike into slashing damage.

You can take 3 levels of Rogue for a dex wis monk. Don't know about strength focus. Maybe str 18 dex 16 wis con 14 but that's really MAD

You can easily build a dex-based monk in pathfinder; Weapon Finesse feat gets you Dex to-hit, plus the Amulet of Mighty Fists with the Agile enchantment gets you Dex to damage. In PF:KM, it's called "Amulet of Agile Fists".

I don't think it made it into PF:KM, but in the tabletop version of pathfinder the "Guided" weapon enchantment (which can likewise apply to an AoMF) allows you to use Wisdom instead of Strength for melee damage calculations; for a monk who does a 1 level dip into cleric worshipping Irori (the monk god of knowledge; unarmed being the deity's favored weapon), there's also the "Guided Hand" feat, which allows you to use Wisdom for your attack rolls as well, so you could just go entirely Wisdom-based.
