Melee Ranger with Spear viable?
Hey guys,

like the topic is showing, my question is if a ranger can be a good option when mainly playing with a spear.

I'am searching for a class that fit with spears without the risk to only use auto attack. There should be some versatility.

Maybe you can give me some hints for that because i'am a little bit overwhelmed with so much classes/subclasses. xD

Thanks.

Ranger's get the class feature "Combat Style", which allows them to pick a style of fighting and select feats that benefit such.

I will say I haven't played a Ranger in this game, so I am uncertain what Combat Styles have made the cut in this game. That said, I know they at least get the styles for Archery (not useful to you), and Two Weapon Combat. If you're fine with dual wielding, this is an option. The combat styles that may even be in the game consist of https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/ranger/ranger-combat-styles/. For your interests, two weapon fighting, 2h fighting, or weapon and shield are about the only ones you might want.

Note that the normal "Spear" is not a 2 handed or "Reach" weapon. Are you going for a full "polearm," 2h big weapon? Or a spear and shield sorta thing?

Otherwise, yes, Ranger itself should be a fine class to play. A long as you can make the combat style feats work for you, nothing about them is magically ranged focused.

Hmm.. Do you complete Ned revenge quest? After defating Stag Lord you can return to zombi Ned and get +1 spear from his body like a reward.
