Camping supplies and rations should perhaps be two different things. Not going to use a brand spanking new tent and bedroll every time you camp. But as above... some tweaks would make it much better by giving some choice. Hunt or just carry around lots of food so you dont have to waste so much time resting.

You'll succeed eventually, and can't rest before that happens. The longer wait is because the hunter failed the first few rolls.

First when I played I had almost always long hunting trips.
Now I almost only see short trips, a lot of them are only foraging which I think takes no time at all. (it doesn't say any time stated)
I use a druid with nature skill + a second character for that additional boost.

The last rests I have seen have been maybe 3 with just foraging for no time at all and 1 hunt that I think took less than 3 hours.

One thing that I don't understand: why can't you find more than six rations when hunting? Hunters always return with six, nothing left for the next rest. You'd think that an experienced hunter would sometimes catch more than that, no?

I have no idea how they decide it but it is vague in the pnp game as well. They condensed survival into lore(nature), which is fine, I guess.

In pnp, you do a dc10 surival check to get food/water for yourself. For every 2 points you beat the 10, you get food/water for 1 more person. Feeding a party of 6 would be a DC 20 survival check.

How long that check takes is GMs discretion. Apparently, they just roll a d20..:P

considering my hunter has 14 bonus to the roll, i find it unlikely that there truly isnt something amiss with the hunting system

That's because... erm...
Okay, you have a great point there. Cooking clearly doesn't require rations, since it needs separate ingredient.

And a skilled ranger or such spending that many hours in a forest to find food? Yeah, hardly realistic either.

I've never played in a pnp group that actually bothered to track rations. That's one of the first things that everyone houserules away, because it's about as much fun as keeping track of bathroom breaks.
Almost 50% of the campaigns that I have played, have kept track of rations... but we've never taken their encomberance into account... they're like gold... you just carry it, unless you want to carry a rediculous amount.

Hum you should have 2 small bags of holding and a bag of holding (400 free carry capacity total) before the "real" start of chapter 2 so i don't get your problems. Carrying 18 to 24 rations is no big deal.

Always hunt and use ration too, so that the rest will always have a duration of 9 hours.

im still hoping there will be DLC that adds a buttload of Quality of Life Spells, and Feats. Like people have said, there are so many spells axed from the game, spells that make the pnp experience so much more fun to play, and that shouldn't be the case because at the end of the day, we play this game for the same reason we play pnp, to have fun and experience a cool story. With the time restraints in place as is, not having create food and water to speed the camping process along is kind of irritating.

but you has all that food in your inventory.
ChopSuey™ Oct 13, 2018 @ 7:43pm
So true. I've got 100 pounds of meats, berries, fish, butters, oils, salts, and all sorts but you know... that's all for special meals at rest time for stat buffs :)

that dose nothing for your daily rations for healing,( im assumeing this was sarcasm)

as far as i have noticed certain regions are more likely to have your hunt being short while other are the opposite. but that may just be orbital wobble, i dont know.

in that case its a very valid question though, not enough we have timers and try minimizing rests, but this bothersom possibility of losing an entire day because of wonky mechanics. at least explain them to us. and if they are truly random... sc*ew you

a true hunter worth his salt never hunts more than he needs.

besides, if he already spend 16 hours to finally hunt enough for sixth rations so one does not have to suffer i pretty much guess he says screw it after accomplishing that. who knows how long the next ration would take? he's clearly doing something wrong, not worth the risk

Once you find Kameberry surprise, you can basically sell all other food at least. It's the best cooking recipe by far. 1 fast heal for a full day, utterly bonkers good.

But yeah, the rations are too heavy, hunting is ludicrously dumb (even if the heavy part is 'water', every divine caster can use the 0 lvl, at will cantrip of 'create water') and you'd think if you shot a deer for food while hunting, you wouldn't throw away the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ carcass after eating ~4-5 lbs of meat from it.
