Bartholomew rescue
Hey there, i am at the point where bartholomew's house is swarmed by trolls and he gets beaten up by them in his lab. I've read that people actually saved him somehow from those trolls, but everytime i start that fight he immediately gets oneshot by the three trolls before i can even take my first action. Is there a trick to it? I had him kill Dimwit in my first encounter with him. Playing in normal with weak crits on.

Obligatory: SPOILER ALERT

To save him, you have to have been to see him before his house was assaulted. During your first meeting with him you tell him that the trolls are immune to fire now and he is able to make changes to his traps.

Then, when you come back, he's actively fighting off trolls rather than getting killed. You still have to save him though, so be prepared to fight a few borba-haters.

It sounds like you had seen him previously, but I am guessing you either didn't tell him about the fire or his survival depends on letting him keep Dimwit.

I told him about the fire immunity and let him keep dimwit, He still died. I think. I got the dialouge that he died, and never went back to check lol

as i said i did meet him before, i told him to kill off his pet troll and stop torturing him, but he knew that they're immune to fire damage. I did the part where he cuts out the brand from the dead troll in his trap. guess i found another bug, or maybe you cant tell him to kill dimwit?

Well, I had exactly the same bug as the OP....Never met Bartholomew before, but when I entered his basement he was there, being killed by three trolls. He mentiones something about his whip and that's it...thought he was meant to be killed, but I basically stopped playing aftrer finding out he is actually an advisor....I love this game but bugs like this just make me go ballistic...ah well.

I think the current patch notes are for the version from a couple days ago, and this bug occured even with that installed. Fingers crossed the new update fixes this issue.

If only my last save wasn't just before the stag lord fight >.< i could've sworn i made more manual saves after that, dang it...

Yeah, his life isn't guaranteed. You do still have to physically save him. On any difficulty over normal, I would say it's not gonna happen unless you are a very lucky over-leveled wizard with a very high initiative (like a Diviner) and a few lucky Hold Person spells.

How do guys get the troll attack on Lone House map with Bartholomew? I have tried older saves all the way to the start of Troll quest and Ancient Curse 1 becoming active but I have been unable to trigger the scene to happen for me. When I choose neutral choice dialogue option and let Bartholomew keep Dimwit when I return his lab Dimwit has disappeared from his cell. So I haven't figured out how to get the Guiding Beacon quest from him that deals with the whip. Some bug issue or I have missed something crucial? Not like I'm going to replay all the way from there but I have been curious to see the scene or dialogue related to it with older saves.

Dude, it's not a bug. I pissed him off and had to kill him. Sometimes you just have to deal with the consequences. If he falls in battle, he falls in battle. His invincibility was stripped off for a reason.

spam healing spells on him from both your priest and linzi and you may keep him alive longer (also pre-buff your party, haste if you can )

It is definitely doable on higher difficulties (I managed to save Bartholomew on "challenging") but you need to have some luck and tactic to do it. This is a typical situation to buff up like hell before starting it. Standard spells are "Haste" and "Slow" (without it I don't see much chances) plus everything that increases your hit chances and damage output. Bartholomew has to survive long enough to cast his protective spells so you can reload if he gets knocked down before doing so. Take down the weaker enemies first (Dimwit, then the "normal" troll and finally the branded troll) and toss in some attack spells if available. This is obviously a fight against time since the trolls almost never turn on your team before they have downed Bartholomew so you have to deal as much damage as fast as possible.

I saved him....barely I am playing on Hard difficulty, I had a scroll of vanish and managed to run up to him and use it which caused the trolls to focus new targets temporarily. I also spammed heal on him with tristan. not aoe heal. I also pre buffed before the fight and used enlarge on amiri and haste on the group to get the job done....I am a monster tact so i pre summoned and used summon undead prior. he is alive and grateful.

it took me 3 tries but I was excited to see it was not in vain.

The scroll of vanish was probably the easiest way to take dmg off of him long enough to make this work for me. I can burn down enemies fast but this encounter was super fast and you had to act tactfully. good luck to anyone who has to deal with this later on.

I didnt this event at all, i talked to him during the troll quests and let him continue experimenting on dimwit, then i visited him randomly later to see if he had achieved anythign in his research and there he was just packing up and i offered him to go to the capital which he accepted. at no point was he ever in danger.
Stestorm [SCO] Oct 7, 2018 @ 11:21pm
You get an adviser telling you hes in danger..seems to happen if you take a while before going onto the troll main base...its worth taking your time to meet some of the special encounters out and about while travelling :P
