To save him, you have to have been to see him before his house was assaulted. During your first meeting with him you tell him that the trolls are immune to fire now and he is able to make changes to his traps.
Then, when you come back, he's actively fighting off trolls rather than getting killed. You still have to save him though, so be prepared to fight a few borba-haters.
It sounds like you had seen him previously, but I am guessing you either didn't tell him about the fire or his survival depends on letting him keep Dimwit.
Well, I had exactly the same bug as the OP....Never met Bartholomew before, but when I entered his basement he was there, being killed by three trolls. He mentiones something about his whip and that's it...thought he was meant to be killed, but I basically stopped playing aftrer finding out he is actually an advisor....I love this game but bugs like this just make me go ballistic...ah well.
I think the current patch notes are for the version from a couple days ago, and this bug occured even with that installed. Fingers crossed the new update fixes this issue.
Dude, it's not a bug. I pissed him off and had to kill him. Sometimes you just have to deal with the consequences. If he falls in battle, he falls in battle. His invincibility was stripped off for a reason.
It is definitely doable on higher difficulties (I managed to save Bartholomew on "challenging") but you need to have some luck and tactic to do it. This is a typical situation to buff up like hell before starting it. Standard spells are "Haste" and "Slow" (without it I don't see much chances) plus everything that increases your hit chances and damage output. Bartholomew has to survive long enough to cast his protective spells so you can reload if he gets knocked down before doing so. Take down the weaker enemies first (Dimwit, then the "normal" troll and finally the branded troll) and toss in some attack spells if available. This is obviously a fight against time since the trolls almost never turn on your team before they have downed Bartholomew so you have to deal as much damage as fast as possible.
it took me 3 tries but I was excited to see it was not in vain.
The scroll of vanish was probably the easiest way to take dmg off of him long enough to make this work for me. I can burn down enemies fast but this encounter was super fast and you had to act tactfully. good luck to anyone who has to deal with this later on.
