Finesse Training is for the selected weapon adding dex to your damage roll.
Check your rogue weapon profiency for what weapons he can use.
At level 1 you gain rogue proficiency which let you equip simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, and short sword.
At level 1 you also gain the feat weapon finesse that lets you add dexterity to hit with any light weapon or weapon with the finesse trait.
At level 3, you gain the ability finesse training which lets you choose any one weapon in the game that can be affected by weapon finesse to add your dexterity to damage with.
finesse training does not make you proficient in the weapon you choose, so picking the kukri is valid but not useful. I recommend the rapier if you plan to wield one weapon, or the shortsword if you plan to dual-wield.
-----
You can look at guides on this site for companion builds. I recommend power attack only on characters that will wield two-handed weapons, and not on Valerie, since her bonus to hit is bad. Precise shot is basically required on anyone who plans to mostly make ranged attacks.
Weapon finesse adds your dex modifier when determining whether you hit the target
finesse training adds your dex modifier to damage.
