I don't think he "HAS" to be in your party tho.
He just ports in using a gate effect that looks suspiciously like the ones the Fey use, steals the Occulus of Abbadon, and gives it to his mistress. If you DO bring him, you have several opportunities, while exploring the tomb, to try to convince him that doing what's right is one's duty, if one is of Good alignment, and that it's generally still for the best even when it requires sacrifice or pain. If you do that, you might be able to convince him to destroy the Occulus instead of handing it over to his boss. This then allows you to woo the Guardian of the Grove eventually, if you do a bunch of other things in a specific way, pick the right dialogue options, etc.
No need to necro a 4 year old thread. This game is designed around failing and trying again by loading an older save.
Load the old save, buy more rations, scrolls of heal and restoration and maybe some Death Ward to stop the level drain and try again. This dungeon and the Hall at The edge of Time are the ones with the need for the most specific spells/feats/abilities needed.
