There's supposed to be an option to use diplomacy on the Barbarians. But you won't get it if you insulted them during the initial feast.
They are evil anyway. They were going to sacrifice the barbarians to Vordikai and you get in the way. The barbarian leader tells you this, which is why he was dragging his feet in helping the witches (witches have a bad habit of leading barbarians to their deaths needlessly).
You fixed the issue and had to be stopped, which is why they turned on you, the barbarian leader knew it was BS, but followed orders.
Sooo yeah, barbarians are serious business about table manners
There is a possible diplomacy check with the barbarians to get some of them to not fight. There's no diplomacy with the sisters because they're obviously not open to negotiations. It's obvious af from the moment you meet them that they're evil and are up to no good.
I don't think any of the writing is especially good in this game so far, but I thought this barbarians/sisters part was especially bad.
My favorite was in the cave where if you let Amiri kill the sister because she's obviously up to no good and is getting a bunch of barbarians killed for her evil schemes the raven asks you why you let it happen and you get only 3 dumb answer choices: like 1) I wanted to spare her suffering 2) don't remember this choice but it was equally as stupid and 3) none of your business. Absolutely quality writing...
It was also weird that they are characterised as CE, the first one I saved was quite grateful, the one at the camp asking you for help seemed genuinely concerned for her siblings. Even the one who led the barbarians to their deaths seemed more zealous than evil per se.
This whole sequence was confusing and unsatisfying. Made your good choices feel like bad tbh.
Though if you read the text when you find the dead sister, it should be clear that they haven't been quite honest with you.
Yeah this comment is spot on. Its basically, i spared her more suffering, she stood in my way, or non of your beeswax... The game has a good engine in terms of time management and such but almost the entire story seems extremely condensed and rushed...
