because druid(unless you picked domain) is a full companion class

Boon Companion can't improve your Animal Companion more than your total HD. So like InEffect said, if you took it as a class feature at level 1 and you haven't multiclassed it's no use for you.

but as Druid my pet is still behind in levels...

What level are you? There's a chart somewhere that shows the full pregression of an animal companion and it's like 3/4, so at level 20 it's only level 16.
If you're still curious, save your game, take the feat and see what level it becomes

Pet is always behind. it's capped at character level -4. so at level 20 your pet will level to 16, assuming you have 20 levels that grant pet progression. Boon feat allows you to dip into non-pet classes for a bit and keep your pet progression intact or to compensate for classes that don't have a full progression like rangers and druids with domain.

At 20 that's true that it's level 16 as I had said with it's progression, but it's not capped at player level -4 if you get an animal companion at level 1.
From this you can see what level Hit Dice (Level) it should have depending on your level that it's at. So obviously on this chart, a level 20 ranger without boon companion will have a class level of 16

it's easier to count that way instead of looking at the chart. The game does it for you. only thing you should know if you pet progression level.

Boon companion doesn't give your pet +4 levels. Instead it calculates your pet AS IF your Druid had +4 levels (but capped at character level of said Druid).
e.g. if you have a fighter 4/ druid 8 with boon companion, you're a level 8 druid BUT a level 12 character, therefor your companion is calculated as if you were a druid 12.
If you are otoh already a Druid 12 then boon companion does nothing because the +4 bonus in Druid levels can't exceed your actual character level.

To show how boon companion works based off VoD's example, here's the full pet progresssion for a full pet progression class, and what happens with Boon companion/multiclassing:

Level 1: Pet is Level 2.
Level 2: Pet is Level 3.
Level 3: Pet is Level 3.
Level 4: Pet is Level 4. Pet level for a level 4 Druid or Druid 1-3/Other Class 1-3 w/ Boon.
Level 5: Pet is Level 5.
Level 6: Pet is Level 6.
Level 7: Pet is Level 6.
Level 8: Pet is Level 7. Pet level for 8 Druid & 4 levels of another class w/o Boon.
Level 9: Pet is Level 8.
Level 10: Pet is Level 9.
Level 11: Pet is Level 9.
Level 12: Pet is Level 10. Pet level for Druid with 12 levels or 8 Druid/4 other w/ Boom.
Level 13: Pet is Level 11.
Level 14: Pet is Level 12.
Level 15: Pet is Level 12.
Level 16: Pet is Level 13. Pet level for 12 Druid/8 Other w/ Boon.
Level 17: Pet is Level 14.
Level 18: Pet is Level 15.
Level 19: Pet is Level 15.
Level 20: Pet is Level 16. Full Druid or 16 Druid/4 other w/ Boon

Combining full pet progression classes (for whatever reason) like Sylvan Sorcerer with druid would still make Boon Companion useless for that build. I'm not sure how it works for a class with like 10 levels of partial progression, 10 levels of full progression and boon companion.

Another example: I believe a level 20 character with 10 levels of Mystic Theurge and a 10 level mix of Sylvan Sorcerer + Feyspeaker at level 20, would have a level 12 pet (treated as a level 14 Druid for pet level).

I thought Prestige Classes dont raise any class features other than Spells Learned & Spell Slots??

A Druid/Ranger has an effective druid level of Druid + (Ranger -3) which is exactly equal to Druid+Ranger-3 :P

If you added a second partial pet class it would be the sum of the effective druid levels (so Druid+Both Other Classes-6). Note that a "partial progression class" is dead levels UNTIL it gains it's partial progression feature. So 4Druid + 4Ranger + 1-3Animal Domain = 5th level druid

10 leevels combined between Druid/Sorcerer being counted as full level druid +4 from boon companion = 14th level druid. The prestige class is unrelated (it's dead levels for the purpose of the companion).
