From what I've seen it only helps you with one random encounter, then never comes back. At least for me anyways.

I've bumped into it repeatedly but it hasn't spoken after the first encounter.

it has come to help me twice in one playthru so far. doesn't speak after initial encounter- just shows up during random encounter and fights with my party.

OK it spoke on my second encounter but it just said it was there to help me.... but it helped me vs 3 goblins.... which was useless I wish it was there when I had to solo the 7-8 great bears before that but NO it was no where to be seen.

It helped me with two Poisonous Manticores.

I'm not certain, but I think it will show up to help in random encounters in the same region you initially meet it.

it pops in randomly as a % chance into random encounters, had teh kitty about 6-7 times in my playthrough already and m not even past half way point yet.

In my last run-through the dweomercat appeared in eight consecutive encounters to assist my party. I'm not sure what determines how long it will help you, but I did note that it only took damage in the eighth and final encounter, so perhaps there are a certain number of hit points it is willing to lose before leaving you.
