Jeez flipping hell this game is unfair
First, im a veteran of Pathfinder, and both neverwinter nights games. I went into this game hearing how hard it was, and I tried to minmax my MC as a nice melee rogue. And Im still being shocked as hell at the unfair things being thrown at me.

Im in the mines with the mites, already done the spiders and the bandit camp, and im down to playing on easy. Im level 2 and these enemies are ALL at least level 3. Theres tons of poison enemies everywhere. The priests are level 5 and spamming hold person and channel negative energy. Theres random level 7 spiders running around. Ive long since used up my 20-something healing potions and am relying on a character surviving each fight to pick the others up.

Another massive problem is the horrible party make up. I made a martial rogue, figuring ill pick up a couple casters a for companions. NOPE. Im stuck with a barbarian, a tower shield fighter, and a bard. Three melees, a weak support, and no casters.

1. Do the Ancient Tomb quest given to you by the stranger you meet on the road as soon as you leave Oleg's Trading Post. You'll get a spellcasting companion as a result (you choose between an elf and a dwarf -I suggest the elf).

2. Do the Temple of the Elk quest to gain another spellcasting companion.

3. Do the Technic League quest to get 2 more spellcasting companions.

Note: max party size is 6 so you'll have to choose who to bring along when you have 7 or more party members.

The game also kind of hits you over the head with going to those 3 locations first. You skipped that, and went to the level 3-4 dungeon.

After Chapter 1, the game is far less hand-holding, so as a general rule in this game, if things are too tough, you're probably in the wrong place.

Just one thing - the companion you get at the Temple of the Elk doesn't become available immediately. AFAIK, you still have to pretty much clear chapter 1 (beating the Stag Lord) before you gain the ability to actually add him to your party.

More generally, this game really isn't hard at all unless you take the difficulty above Normal. On Normal or Casual, you can pretty much make a party as you like without too much worry... but yeah, you DO need to do things in the proper order, especially early on.

That entirely depends on how early you free him, if you free him late you dont get to use him until after the end of chapter 1, if you free him early you can take him in to your party immediatly.

Play with the difficulty settings - you will find a balance that fits your playstyle. I was finding the game frustrating but after tweaking a few things I really came to enjoy it.

You can customize many different aspects of the gameplay.

If you do the Temple of the Elk BEFORE you go to Old Sycamore you can get him. Otherwise he's stuck in bed for the rest of the first chapter.

Priests are brutal. Try sleeping the mites and charging the priest. Thats how I killed them in my last game. Grease is huge when it lands but I forget how high their saves are. Charge was key for me though.

Theres a lot of things that just slap you in the face lol. I love it

I dont have anything called temple of elk or technic league available. I did the ancient tomb after the bandit camp and there was no one there. I had to track him to the old sycamore.

That means you chose to skip it... An old man gave you warning and you ignored it
This game gives you time limits and mutually exclusive options

Also as a pathfinder veteran aswell, im having trouble figuring how are you struggling with a rogue MC in this game given how easy it is to sneak-attack and the fact that you have 3 melee and a bard to boost to-hit

I can kill stuff just fine, but everything can kill me easily too. Every single enemy is higher level than me and theres a LOT more of them than there are of me. Between the time I had entered the old sycamore area and the time i entered the caves, I had used up 23 healing potions because every single fight is deadly.

True... but that's because you chose to do it without a cleric and at level 1-2 and with only 3 party members. You could easily gone for 4 at the old tomb and recruited either the cleric or the undead chick

Or even followed the main quest, gone to the temple of the elk and recruited the 2nd cleric, garanteed to have been lvl 3 by the time you'd reach the caves

Bottom line... you chose to do a higher level area while underleved

After you do the bandit camp, you go north and hit the abandoned hut. That gives you the location of Temple of the Elk (the boss there is gonna give you hell most likely, but it's easier than the sycamore boss).

Odds are, you'll be ambushed by the technic league on the way there, causing the reveal of their camp.
Starvald Jul 5, 2019 @ 10:13am
As others have said, if you do the temple of the elk before sycamore, you can get a cleric- then however of the 3 gotten from Tomb/Temple/Sycamore is out for the rest of the act. Although, I am unsure what happens if you leave the tomb out, or do it last.

Did you do Thorn Ford, and free Jhod, then talk to him back at Olegs? That gives you the Temple of Elk quest I think (although just rescuing him might do that). You will end up at the temple anyway, as part of the story quite soon anyway, and travelling in that area will likely trigger the technic league encounter.

The problem is you got a little ahead of yourself, which is easy to do - I was the same on my first playthrough of this act, although I had the extra party member from the tomb, but it still hurt - those priests..... ouch, such a shock first time. Should be easier when you hit level 3.

There's also a couple of hidden areas on the map you can do as well, for additional xp.

Walk around and do random lvling up. In the first Act the main quests are timed only in relevance to each other.

But I get what OP is saying. It is kinda poor design. You get choices in how you do your quest and you get punished for choosing one of the viable options by not getting the oh so essential party members.

If you go - Camp - Tomb - Sycamore, you will be lvl 2, and have only 3 ppl with you, which is way too low to complete this quest. So one has to play Meta to be able to progress.

OP, the advice for your situation that I've seen on the net is this - right after you clear out Oleg's trading post and without lvling up to lvl 2 you go straight to Anoriel Eight Eyes and recruit 2 custom companions, because at lvl 1 they cost only 500 gold. Then it should be way easier to do all the stuff even with the lvl differences.

So in a game where the main quest is emphasizing that theres a TIME LIMIT... im supposed to go randomly exploring with no purpose in mind just so I can come across an extra quest that will help get me the companions i pretty much NEED to have in order to progress?

And the old mans warning didnt give any indication that i had to go to the tomb immediately, or that I would miss out on something major if I didnt.
