You get almost no discount for the ascension DLC with Imperial edition.
And the ascension DLC gives you: Soundtrack, Digital Artbook, two in-game portraits, board game module, hi rez map, and a red panda.
Which is mostly just pointless extra. So unless the board game module is absolutely incredible I'm personally going with Explorer + DLC Bundle.
I wish there was a base game + Season Pass bundle like Deadfire has.
Note: Neither the Imperial nor Royal editions actually give you the "board game module" yet. Still waiting on that one. After 8-9 months, it finally went into "play testing." ETA: Unknown.
Then there's even less of a reason to get that now. Yeah I'm pretty certain I'm going to go with the same solution as OP. Explorer + Season. Got until the july 9th to do so.
