Should I pick up the DLC as a new player?
Or should I just wait until I finish the base game and decide if I like it enough to play the DLCs?

well.....that really depends...do you think its possible this is a game you want to replay? 1 playthrough is easily over 100 hours...

Well finish Act 1 at least. Pick the new companion DLC then. If you finish Chapter 3 and are ready for Chapter 4, pick Varnholds Lot DLC. Play it before Chapter 4. If after whole game there is not enough fighting monsters for you, you can try Endless Dungeon.

Varnhold Lot is really hard compared to the main game, but it has some good loot that you can sort of transfer to your main game, specially if you have a Paladin in your party.

I would. This is a 100 hour game, and you my only want to play it once.

DLC1 - Extra companion with an interesting story, another class, and another race
DLC2 - A lore cookie to play in the middle of the main game. Interesting but not essential, and only minor effects to the main game.
DLC3 - An extra dungeon to play through in the main game, and the stand along endless dungeon is fun to test out builds.

All have at least some positive impact on the main game, but if you're having trouble justifying the extra $20-25, the base game is good enough as is.

Play the main game first I would say, as fun as the game is there is a lot wrong a lot of bugs and for some people can't stand it some look past some don't care. Be fiscally responsible is my advice. I love the idea of the game bought it at launch but its still too unrefined for me to finish and I bought the season pass too so I'm bit disappointed myself but I know people who love the game soo yeah.

This is a sentiment that I'm confused about. I mean my first play through was a buggy mess. But I did an iron man run 100% completion with bugs about 3 months ago. I'm playing again with the EE, and there is a ton of new free content (boggards), again, with no bugs.

I see that you put many hours into Underrail and well as the earlier Fallout series with top-down perspective. With that said, I think you will be happy with Kingsmaker given the most recent updates. I would invest in a nicer version of the game during the summer sale, with all the goodies, especially if you like D&D tabletop 3.5 or Pathfinder as a roleplaying game. Beneath the Stolenlands is a nice sandbox to test out various character builds before committing to the main story line in a rogue-like dungeon that constantly changes when you explore it.

I updated the base game before all the extras could be added in because I liked it so much. I think we have similar tastes in gaming.

It's called the original, or the actual real Fallout series.

The Wildcard DLC is a must have as it gives you access to an amazing new NPC and kenetics class type at the start of the game.

Can you do all companion quests in this game or do you have to stick to a team?

And one of the Tiefling bloodlines gives nature knowledge, bite attacks and wisdom, makes a very good race for a druid merc

You can do all companion quests, even if you go with five mercenaries.
