Question on respeccing characters.

Hey all had a quick question for ya. I want to respec Valerie and the emo dwarf. I want them to stay the same class but a different kit. How do I do that? Every time I click on fighter for valerie it goes back to shield tower specialtist. Appreciate the help!

You gotta use the respec mod to change initial build

You can't change their archetype or anything else they got at Level 1, only the levels that come after (and archetypes are permanent).

The devs made a deliberate decision to disable kit-changing for the joinable NPCs because they felt it would break immersion. I don't agree with their decision but they've made clear they won't reconsider it, so your best bet would be to install the respec mod (which does allow you to change kits).

Nearly every joinable NPC in the game was given a subpar kit. Amiri would have been much better as a mad dog or an invulnerable rager, Jaethal would have been better as a monster tactician, Jubilost would have been better as a grenadier, Octavia would have been better as a sylvan sorcerer, Regongar would have been better as a sword saint, Linzi would have been better as a thundercaller, Tristian would have been better with the animal domain, Valerie would have been better with anything other than TSS, and Nok-Nok… actually, he's fine as-is.

Mods don't break achievements.

I think they kinda tried to make the characters fit story-wise. Valarie has high charisma for no reason... I see it as when she was training to be a paladin. We have 2 types of players in my dnd group. The one that just looks at numbers and tries to make the most broken character possible and doesn't even participate besides combat... and the other is the guy that will accept a bad stat roll and make it into part of his character's backstory. To each their own, I suppose.

It’s better than it looks, but first level is identical to regular fighter. The only thing it locks you out of are the other fighter archetypes, and as much as she wants to be one she’s not really cut out to be a fighter.

She’s fine, eventually, but there are other things she’s better at.

With Val you can do both. I use her as a tanking Bard and she does great, casting spells with a tower shield, dodging blows with Mirror Image, in perfect position to unleash cone spells.

It all works out.

She’s also kinda thuggish if you want to go that direction.

With Val I can't get why folks don't get her? Drop the tower shield until you get to the level that lets you use them without the penalties. She does fine as a sword and shield. Once she can use the tower shield get the one in the shop. Than turn her into a Stalwart Defender (think I went to 7 lvl TSS). She makes a great tank. Though I do admit it would be cool if you had an option to make her a paladin of another faith. Than again my first play through my main char was a Sword and Shield firgter so he paired great with her and Harm as Shield walls in combat (he turned from LN to LG mid game so I made him go paladin after level 10 fighter).

There are so many combo's you can still do with the base companions. Just mix it up some....or make your own.

Of course is helps when Aldori Defender Linzi is Disarming everyone. Notice the attacks of opportunity triggered when the disarmed guy tries to attack.

This is on Unfair, so he can't really complain.
