It’s better than it looks, but first level is identical to regular fighter. The only thing it locks you out of are the other fighter archetypes, and as much as she wants to be one she’s not really cut out to be a fighter.
She’s fine, eventually, but there are other things she’s better at.
With Val you can do both. I use her as a tanking Bard and she does great, casting spells with a tower shield, dodging blows with Mirror Image, in perfect position to unleash cone spells.
It all works out.
She’s also kinda thuggish if you want to go that direction.
There are so many combo's you can still do with the base companions. Just mix it up some....or make your own.
Here's Val the Bard still lugging around that Tower Shield and doing a pretty good job tanking with it:

Of course is helps when Aldori Defender Linzi is Disarming everyone. Notice the attacks of opportunity triggered when the disarmed guy tries to attack.
This is on Unfair, so he can't really complain.
There's a of lot of fun to be had with trying different things on different companions.
