How to find cody?

I've been trying to be nice to Cody, hold his hand, read him books... and he runs away. I'm on day 36, and the mother's dying of thirst, while I walk through the map trying to find him. How do I find him, and how do I make sure he doesn't run away again?

Just go to Bed on that Day and a Cutscene appears where he comes back

In my try I went outside of the house to the street, found the note, then went back to our bedroom and the scene of her and the gun played - cody back. No big waiting/next day. Can someone try it out if that's how it can play out. Would be better than waiting till next time.
