I'm just saying we can't just use Checkerboard rendering, there is no program (at this time) that can do that yet. It has to be programmed into the actual game.
I wont lie, I only deal with 1080p and 1440p so I dont mess around with 4k, but the only times I've ever seen it mentioned is for consoles to fake 4k and keep their frame rate.
On that note, if the game has 1440p, how come I cant connect my PS4 pro to my 1440p and get it? the Pro supports 4k, and 1440p is less, so why cant I?
I'm not convinced it's actually baked in the engine per se. It's something they implemented on top to accommodate PS4 and Xbone. I think the original release on the previous Xbox version did not include checkerboard rendering. I remember reading an article by a game dev. that including it was both a hassle and a boon, something like that.
I think checkerboard isn't all that commonly used on PC games. Could be many reasons for that, both tech and their (devs) convenience (less work/time) when they know people know how to upscale/downscale if they want. These days you have upscaling options on GPU's themselves too.
Also I disagree re: that it's better, at least on PC. But that's just personal eyeball preference I suppose.
If you haven't already, install the 4k texture pack, enable Assets to turn them on, and upscale to 150% if you feel a need. It'll look fine.
