To answer your question though: yes you can start this game without playing other games in the series.
HOWEVER FFXV was the one step child that got a movie (Final Fantasy Kingsglaive) that shows an important event that occurs "off screen" in the game. You don't need to watch this to start the game although I do recommend it because it provides visual to one of the most crucial moments from the overall narrative while the game only just "tells" you about it. Your experience won't be ruined by skipping it though.
There is also a anime series (Final Fantasy Brotherhood) that acts as a prequel as well that just gives an additional layer of development to the main characters. I don't think anything from this is necessary to watch to understand the game.
Tldr: No other games in the series need to be played. There is a movie, and anime series that add to the narrative as a whole although these are not mandatory to still get into the story.
Thanks for the much needed explanation.
Spirits Within wasn't tied to the game story and Advent Children was several years after FF7 so...they're still right.
They mentioned the -2s (FFX and FFXIiI) but the same applies to FFVII with it's FFVII "sequels".
It also applies to FFiV and FFIV: the after years.
The important thing to take from the reply was that no, you do not have to play other Final Fantasy titles to understand and enjoy FFXV. There is no real story interaction between the different main titles in the series. So, FFXV story has nothing at all to do with FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, etc. etc. and there is no point to playing any of the other Final Fantasy games when it comes to the story of FFXV.
The entire series is really standalone titles in the same "multiverse" with similar themes, enemies and such, but there is no requirement to play certain titles in the series to play any other.
