I did not use those items until I found weapons that were the same strength, it is not cheating just overpowered at that point.
I noticed that myself lucky enough very early in the game, so I made a list of all the stuff in the DLC (yes there is much more than only weapons, and you can read that on the store page and with some search with Google). Then I started a new game from scratch, and made sure not to use those items. That way you experience the game on the difficulty level it was meant to have. The only DLC stuff you cannot chage is the reduced price of everything.
It gives very early access to 9999dmg warp strike spam. That is pretty damn powerful for a weapon you start with.
I've never had 9999dmg warp strike at the beginning of the game, that started to happen in later chapters. About chapter 9, at least for me anyway.
Well - If you want to play on "easy" then you can use them, but if you really want to earn more powerful weapos by working for it, I suggest to not use any off them (and that also goes for that insane armor and rings and amulets). At the end it's your game, and you have to choose how you want to play it, but I refuse to make the early game play too easy for me (yes - I am going to replay this game for sure).
Don't listen to them, they're the ones that would give you a rock and tell you to fight them while they're holding a gun to you.
