Particularly the sword. With max airstep upgrades that thing is a beast and I still use it over all others even the after-story dungeon and quest swords.
The others aren't bad although gun and greatsword aren't my favorite weapon types. they're all good at least for gearing the team.
Beware though, there is a TON of grinding you need to do repeating the boss fight over and over and over again. Still, if you get all the tomestone pickups, you should be able to make 2 of the maxed weapons with only 10 boss fights if you're good at breaking the wings to get feathers.
You can also get a lot of the cid weapon upgrades done if you look up where to find the pieces. I think I used Ultima Weapon until I got the one from the garuda fight area.
While doing that you'll gain some levels too and as I mentioned, you only need to win the garuda fight 10 times to get 2 maxed weapons from the shop there if you break a wing every fight to get the feathers.
You don't even need to expend expericasts to get good XP, just load prompto with gravisphere and use it as often as possible and equip a gun so you don't have to chase them down. On top of that, once you can reliably warp strike them to death, the AP is pretty incredible too.
Remember to equip the exo-suit so you're immune to their damage for 30 minutes and burn through repeats as fast as possible.
---Most of the best general accessories are from post-game Menace dungeons.
----The best singular accessory is the V2 "suit" (HP +2000, STR +100, VIT +70 from lvl 99 mech Angelus (dropships) , but getting both Angelus to appear and him to actually drop it can be a very very serious grind. Especially if you want more than one....mind, it's not really needed, but it is the "best" accessory, it stacks, and all bro's can use one.
eg. a lot of stuff outside of Garuda grind is close to or is post-game, by design.
...I'm kind of old school (pre-Royal Edition habits). I never wear that invulnerable suit thingie or use that DLC sword, for example. So I like having all the stuff that boosts stats and def, or other more unique things, not just "the most dps weapons". :D
All the "best gear" stuff aside, there's no need to be max level before finishing the story. If you're lvl 99 when you get to the story end you'll likely yawn your way through it all. Story is maybe 50-70 depending on your gear and combat abilities so you could leave 99-120 for post-game and any higher level side-content. After 99, XP needed per level goes up *hugely.*
Anyway ... sorry, that became long.
If you're in the main gear/skill grid/photo access menu, the text list on the left side, should be one called Timed Quests. Click that for the menus that show what the quest of the day or week or whatever it is, is, as well as the reward system/rewards. It'll show a magnified section of the map for location and you have to figure out where that is.
With that in mind, don't be afraid to get on the boat. Despite the scary warning, once you get there the game will soon give you a method where you can travel back to the main open world area (almost) whenever you want. Also, the best XP boosting hotel is there and if you want to level up, you'll want to use the NixExperience Band to horde XP and then go use the hotel.
Filling out the Beastiary tho, last I knew, is not completely possible in a single playthru (you'd have to do a NG+/Chapt. Select run). There's one major reason for this but I dunno if you even care about that so ...
In terms of Chapter accessibility, if you're worried, area access goes like this: after you conclude chapter ... (no story spoilers, just mechanical ones)
when you finish chapter 9, the story starts to go more linear until story end. Main gist: don't go talk to the leader lady in Altissia until you're ready. You *cannot* return to Chapt 10-13 and the intro bit of Chapt. 14 areas in post-game - unless you use Chapt Select later, but that resets *all* Hunt/Quest progress (including chocobos...you do keep all your gearr/items/money etc. tho). If you need to find/do/buy anything in those, do it before leaving/finishing. The main Chapt. 14 area, Altissia, and the main open world sections are post-game accessible.
