I'm new as well and I haven't had any "derp" moments.
It's very lore-friendly - the intro text says "for fans and new players". There's a small tutorial section that you can play which will explain some aspects of the world...
If you're asking whether or not it's somehow connected to other games then don't worry - it starts off very good and it doesn't seem to connect to any other game -- if it does it's unimportant.
The Final Fantasy games are very loosely connected - and by loosely, I mean that they don't even take place in the same universe. The only things they all have in common (besides the obvious, like the title and vague genre) are chocobos, carbuncles and I think Cid the mechanic.
So, FF15 doesn't connect back to any previous games. However, if you are interested in the lore, you might enjoy the FFXV Brotherhood anime and the FFXV Kingsglaive movie. You don't have to watch them, but they are worth checking out. The pre-rendered cutscenes in the game are actually from Kingsglaive!
